A Rush For The Exits

With their poll numbers collapsing, many members of Congress are in a rush to get out of Washington, desperate to get back home and hit the campaign trail. As the House of Representatives took up the resolution to adjourn, House Republican Leader John Boehner turned the routine vote into a referendum on the Bush tax cuts. Boehner urged his colleagues to “Vote no on this adjournment resolution. Give Congress a chance to vote on extending [the Bush tax cuts.]”

As the votes were being cast one endangered incumbent after another broke ranks from the Democrat leadership and voted against adjourning. In the end, Speaker Pelosi prevailed by one vote – 210-to-209. By one vote, the majority party succeeded in preventing the House from considering the Bush tax cuts, leaving a tremendous cloud of uncertainty hanging over small business owners and middle-class families.

President Confronted Again

Kudos to David Greenspon! The successful small businessman confronted President Obama in Iowa yesterday over his plans to raise taxes on the men and women who are doing the most to create new jobs in this tough economy. Here’s what he told the president:

“One of the things that concerns me is the repeal of the Bush tax cuts. The repeal – I don’t care if it is 5 percent – that’s 5 percent that would create a job. Five percent on millions of dollars of profit creates many jobs. …As the government gets more and more involved in business and more and more involved in taxes, what you’re finding is you’re strangling those job-creation vehicles.”

At that point, Obama cut off Mr. Greenspon and his microphone was taken away. Obama told him, “Your taxes haven’t gone up in this administration.” Wrong, Mr. President. There are dozens of tax hikes in the healthcare bill and more coming on January 1st.

These kinds of confrontations seem to be happening more often as Americans who live in the real world get an opportunity to question Obama directly. It started with Joe the Plumber who confronted then-Senator Obama about the candidate’s instincts to “spread the wealth around.” Recently, Velma Hart, a disillusioned supporter, expressed her exhaustion in defending his policies. In each case, Americans are holding the country’s leadership accountable for their hopes and dreams. Welcome to the real America, Mr. President!

More Defections

The looming tax hikes are making a lot of Washington politicians very nervous, and more are defecting from the tax-and-spend agenda every day. Among the many taxes congressional leaders want to raise is the capital gains tax – a tax on investment. Barack Obama wants to increase the capital gains tax by at least one-third.

During the 2008 debates, ABC’s Charlie Gibson questioned then-candidate Obama on his plan to raise capital gains taxes when the evidence shows that less revenue is received from the higher rates. Obama’s immediate response was, “I would look at raising the capital gains tax for purposes of fairness.” It was a classic example of class warfare and envy – using tax policy to achieve some progressive ideal irrespective of the actual outcome (less revenue).

This week nearly four dozen House Democrats rejected the president’s “fairness” argument for raising capital gains taxes. The Associated Press reported, “47 House Democrats are telling party leaders they want to continue Bush-era tax cuts on investment income, breaking ranks with President Barack Obama and exposing divisions among Democrats…”

You Can’t Keep What You Have

Here’s the latest example of ObamaCare taking away the health insurance folks have today: According to the Wall Street Journal, some 30,000 hourly McDonald’s employees may lose their health insurance. Why? An analysis by McDonald’s executives concluded that ObamaCare mandates that take effect next year will make their current health insurance plan “economically prohibitive.”

When the economy was creating jobs under conservative administrations, liberals would derided those jobs as “burger-flipper jobs,” when in fact many successful people have started their careers that way. (Such as Dave Thomas and Ray Kroc.) Granted, these entry-level jobs aren’t ones folks aspire to stay in forever. But liberal policies are taking away private health insurance options from those who can least afford it and shoving them into the government-run Medicaid program – in 2014.

“The Thrill Is Gone”

Facing the prospect of an electoral wipeout in just over a month, Barack Obama left Washington, D.C., to rally the American people to his cause. So, naturally, he went to the university town of Madison, Wisconsin – a hotbed of left-wing activism. And sure enough the president drew a crowd. But how was he received? Suffice it to say, “the thrill is gone.”

Blues fans will recognize that line as the title to a well-known song by B.B. King. It aptly applies to Americans’ view of Barack Obama today. Observing the crowd of students yesterday, an ABC reporter noted, “Their enthusiasm was well under control.” CNN reported, “The overwhelmingly student crowd cheered happily, but without the wild excitement they gave candidate Obama two years ago.”

One student said, “The enthusiasm is definitely down. … People can’t live up to all your hopes and dreams. Obama made a lot of promises.” One Wisconsin political science professor said, “The enthusiasm gap is real. …The euphoria has gone away.”

Islamist Terror Plot Uncovered

Last week we reported that European counterterrorism officials were scrambling. France’s top security official warned, “All the lights are red. They are flashing from everywhere… objectively, there are reasons for worry.” While there was silence from the White House, something serious was obviously being planned.

Today we know what it was. A major plot against European cities has been broken up. According to various news reports, terrorists in Pakistan were plotting “Mumbai-style commando raids” on “economic or soft” targets in England, France and Germany, possibly targeting American tourists at major hotel chains. Officials are not saying whether the United States was targeted in the plot.

We learned of the planned attack after interrogating a suspected terrorist who was intercepted on his way to Europe. It is noteworthy that the jihadist is German. K.T. McFarland, a national security expert in three administrations, said recently that there are German villages in Pakistan where blue-eyed, blonde-haired German converts to Islam are training to commit acts of terror against the West.

Notice her statement – converts to Islam. Journalists are required to convey certain facts, and yet professional reporters often write news stories that ignore those key facts, like the common bond of the attackers – their Islamic faith.

Liberal elites want to tell us that only a small, insignificant percentage of Muslims are terrorists. But in his new book, former British Prime Minister Tony Blair argues that there is a division within Islam and not just between those who espouse violence and those who do not.

Blair argues that the more serious division is between Muslims who simply want to live their lives and those who are dedicated to establishing Sharia law. Among the latter group, some are open about it; some do it through deception, like the ones who want to build a mosque at Ground Zero; while some pursue their goals through violence.

But the number of Muslims who support the establishment of Sharia law – irrespective of the method – is quite large. They may not take up arms or strap on bomb belts to wage jihad, but they encourage it financially or by other means. This “soft jihad” of creeping Sharia law is a threat to the values of individual freedom and religious liberty. It must be fought as vigorously as terrorism.

A Pre-Arranged Question?

As 2010 looks more and more like 1994, the Obama White House is obviously relying on Bill Clinton for political advice. In recent months we’ve seen polls that suggest Obama has a religion problem. It’s not hard to understand why. He attended a bizarre church and has devoted much of his presidency to defending Islam, while ignoring Christianity, and until recently had attended church only about three times since taking office.

Now, with the elections looming, there appears to be a religion offensive underway. The president made headlines recently by attending church in Washington, D.C. And yesterday, at a campaign stop in New Mexico, Obama was asked “Why are you a Christian?” To his credit, Obama offered an answer that Billy Graham would find hard to fault. But it seemed at odds with past remarks.

However theologically correct his answer was yesterday, there is no escaping the fact that he attended a church for 20 years where the teachings were frequently at odds with the Gospel. He has shown little interest in matters of faith during his entire career. But now that his polls are low and his agenda is on the ropes, Obama has found religion.

You Can’t Keep What You Have

During the debate on healthcare reform, the “salesman-in-chief” repeatedly promised us that “If you like your health care plan, you can keep your health care plan.” We’ve known for some time that that isn’t going to be the case for most folks when ObamaCare begins in full force come 2014. But seniors in New England found out recently that change is coming early.

Harvard Pilgrim Health Care, Massachusetts’ second-largest insurance provider, has announced that it is dropping Medicare Advantage. Lynn Bowman, vice president of customer service at Harvard Pilgrim, said, “We know that cuts in Medicare are being used to fund national healthcare reform.” Now, because of federal regulations and mandates, more than 20,000 senior citizens in Massachusetts, Maine and New Hampshire will have to switch to more expensive alternatives or give up the additional coverage completely.

Contrary to the hopes of liberal politicians everywhere, 57% of likely voters want to repeal ObamaCare. As the consequences of this “reform” become more obvious, that number will likely rise.

Democrats’ Disgusting Smears

Yesterday, I told you that the Democrats were getting desperate and going negative with multi-million dollar ad campaigns. Here are a few examples of just how disgusting the Democrat smear campaign is this year.

* Left coast Obama socialist Loretta Sanchez (D-CA) has a relatively safe Democrat seat. Sanchez won her seat after a very close contest in 1996 against conservative stalwart Bob Dornan. Her victory was tainted by credible evidence of voter fraud. Over the past ten years, however, she has won reelection with 60% of the vote or more. But she is in the race of her life this year against Assemblyman Van Tran.

In a recent interview with the Hispanic TV network Univision, Sanchez made this outrageous statement: “The Vietnamese and the Republicans are, with an intensity, trying … to take this seat and give it to this Van Tran, who is very anti-immigrant and very anti-Hispanic.”

Van Tran is a Vietnamese immigrant whose family fled the communist takeover of Vietnam. He is hardly “anti-immigrant.” But he is anti-socialism, which is why he is running against Sanchez and her support for Obama’s left-wing agenda.

* Retired Lt. Col. Allen West is running against incumbent Ron Klein (D-FL). West made headlines in 2003 for his service in Iraq when he used “enhanced” interrogation methods against a captured terrorist to save the lives of his men. During his service in Iraq, his family fell behind in their bills.

Desperate to exploit anything they could find, Florida Democrats put out a mailing attacking West as a deadbeat and tax cheat. Even worse, they publicized his Social Security number in the mailing, which went to tens of thousands of liberal activists. West is an authentic American hero, but that isn’t stopping the Obama/Reid/Pelosi smear machine.

* But the worst smear of the season – so far – goes to Florida Democrat Alan Grayson. Grayson is attacking his opponent, former State Senator Daniel Webster, as “Taliban Dan.” The ad calls Webster “a religious fanatic” for his unapologetic pro-life values and for allegedly suggesting that wives should submit to their husbands. Grayson’s ad so grossly distorts Webster’s remarks that even the liberal media are coming to Webster’s defense.

An analysis by concluded, “Grayson has lowered the bar even further. He’s using edited video to make his rival appear to be saying the opposite of what he really said.” The Orlando Sentienal wrote, “The Grayson campaign edited the original video, chopping it up and taking Webster’s words out of context.”

In a separate ad, Grayson impugns Webster’s patriotism for not serving in Vietnam. With Taps playing in the background, the narrator says, “It breaks an old soldier’s heart to think that Webster could ever be elected to Congress. He doesn’t love this country the way I do. Daniel Webster doesn’t care about us.” called the ad “vicious,” and stated, “…the ad’s charge is disproved by the very documents that the Grayson campaign provides to support their claim. …They show that far from refusing to serve his country, Webster reported for a military examination as soon as he graduated from college, only to be disqualified on medical grounds.”

Alan Grayson should be ashamed of himself. But, then again, this is coming from the same man who stood on the House floor and defended ObamaCare by saying that Republicans wanted sick people to “die quickly.”

Unfortunately, these are the kinds of messages that many Democrats are broadcasting over the airwaves with the millions of dollars they have amassed in their campaign war chests. Hope and change has given way to fear and loathing.

But who is really surprised? These are the same folks who have ignored their constituents for the past two years. They voted to restrict our freedom and passed thousand-page bills without reading them. They voted for higher taxes, job-killing legislation and amassed record amounts of debt in the process. Now, desperate to hold onto power, they are willing to smear any conservative who dares to oppose their Big Government, tax-and-spend, socialist policies.

I’m sharing these facts with you so that you will know the truth and understand exactly what we are up against in the next 35 days. Please share this information with friends and family members so we can spread the word and fight the Democrats’ disgusting smear campaign.

This is also why I frequently come to you to raise funds for conservative ads that counter these vicious attacks. Every dollar you donate to CWF empowers us to do more to make sure this election is not stolen using slash-and-burn tactics and Election Day fraud.

Mahmoud’s Secret Meeting

President Obama has repeatedly promised to meet with Iran’s Holocaust-denying dictator face-to-face and with no preconditions. Ahmadinejad was in New York for several days last week, but presumably the president had prior commitments as no face-to-face meetings between the two heads of state took place. But some Obama supporters did sit down with Ahmadinejad last Tuesday.

According to the New York Post, Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan and members of the New Black Panther Party “shared a hush-hush meal” with Ahmadinejad at the Warwick Hotel on Tuesday. Other sources say “progressives” also attended, including former Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney (D-GA). One can only imagine the conversation that took place.

Fighting Voter Fraud

There has been a lot of coverage in recent years about voter fraud, but the issue is getting renewed attention as we approach another major election. This time new questions are being raised about exactly how widespread the problem really is.

Fox News reported Saturday that the Texas secretary of state and Harris County district attorney are investigating a group called Houston Votes. Leo Vasquez, the Harris County voter registrar, said, “The integrity of the voting rolls in Harris County, Texas, appears to be under an organized and systematic attack by [Houston Votes].”

The scandal was uncovered by a small group of Tea Party activists who were determined to do something. They served as poll watchers in 2008 and were shocked at what they saw. After the election, they formed a group called “True the Vote” and began combing through publicly available records. When they found one precinct in Harris County, Texas, with 24,000 registered voters, they realized the problem was much larger than expected.

They found voters registered at vacant lots. They found a halfway house for eight people with 40 registered voters. They found one woman had been registered six times on the same day and, of course, illegal aliens who were registered to vote.

Then they discovered that the voter registration work had been done by Houston Votes and that the organization was connected to the SEIU, a major left-wing labor union to which Obama has attributed his electoral success.

Here’s what you can do: Make sure you and all your like-minded friends and family members are registered to vote. There are only seven days left to register to vote in most states, so don’t delay. Use this link to register online. Then, make plans to get all your friends and family members to the polls on Election Day.

What A Joke

Just when you think Congress can’t sink any lower in the polls, the politicians invite comedian Stephen Colbert to testify about immigration reform. If you’re not familiar with Colbert’s shtick, he’s a faux Bill O’Reilly, a pretend conservative talk show host who always goes over-the-top to mock conservative positions.

Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-CA), chairwoman of the Subcommittee on Immigration, Citizenship, Border Security and International Law, invited Colbert to talk about the plight of migrant workers in America. He accepted and testified as if he were the character on his TV show. The hearing quickly devolved into a complete mockery. At one point, Colbert tried to submit images of his colonoscopy into the congressional record.

Congress has time for a comedian’s colonoscopy, but it doesn’t have time to renew your tax cuts? As a result, millions of Americans may receive a smaller paycheck on January 1, 2011.

“Ahmadinejad: 9/11 Truther”

The phrase “9/11 truther” refers to those folks who have a bizarre fever that leads them to believe that our own government actually attacked us on 9/11, not the Al Qaeda jihadists who proudly took credit. Unbelievably, polling found that this view was held by a significant percentage of individuals on the Left, but also by some on the Ron Paul Right.

It is also embraced by radical Islamists, including Shiite fundamentalist Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of Iran. He believes it is his job to bring about the coming of a Muslim “messiah,” the 12th Imam, who will rid the world of unbelievers. So Ahmadinejad has an interest in creating strife.

Yesterday, Ahmadinejad went before the United Nations – in New York City – and spouted his outrageous slander. Here’s what he said:

“…some segments within the U.S. government orchestrated the attack to reverse the declining American economy and its grips on the Middle East in order also to save the Zionist regime. The majority of the American people as well as other nations and politicians agree with this view.”
The American delegation walked out as did representatives from the European Union, Australia, Canada, Costa Rica and New Zealand. What does it say about those who remained and listened to Ahmadinejad’s rant? Would Obama have walked out had he been there? Or would he have politely sat there, as he did when Nicaragua’s socialist leader, Daniel Ortega, lectured him for 50 minutes at last year’s Summit of the Americas?

Ahmandinejad does this because he has seen nothing but weakness from our president and feels free to continue to insult us. Obama has been his enabler. Not long after coming into office, Obama launched his world apology tour. He has promised to meet with Iran’s Holocaust-denying dictator. When Ahmadinejad was on the ropes after massive uprisings, Obama stayed silent for days while the Islamic regime brutally suppressed and murdered political dissidents.

Polls show that Americans are increasingly frustrated with President Obama’s domestic policies, but they continue to give him positive ratings on foreign policy. That could change very quickly. After nearly two years of outreach and pandering aimed at enticing Iran to give up its nuclear weapons program, nothing has been accomplished. When we wake up to headlines that Tehran has tested its first atomic weapon, how many will be applauding then?

The Do-Nothing Democrats

Democrats and President Obama have been promising 95% of Americans that their taxes won’t go up at the end of the year when the Bush tax cuts are scheduled to expire. So what are they doing about it? NOTHING.

I was astonished to read this morning that Democrat leaders on Capitol Hill have decided to cancel any votes on preventing the tax hikes before the elections. Republicans are unanimous in making sure that no tax hikes take effect that would only make the Obama recession worse.

This week, more than 300 economists signed a letter to Congress warning that the impending tax hikes “would constitute a profound and damaging ‘anti-stimulus’ that would harm our prospects for expansion in the near future.”

Every day more and more Democrats are coming around to that same conclusion. But Barack Obama, Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid are so determined to raise taxes on successful small businesses, entrepreneurs and job creators that they are willing to risk raising taxes on everyone to get their way.

Nevada Brawl

Remember how last summer’s town hall meetings got heated when concerned citizens turned out to question lawmakers about ObamaCare? It didn’t take long for the Democrats to call in reinforcements, and soon union thugs showed up and citizens were beaten up. Now it’s happening on the campaign trail.

A fight broke out last night during a debate between Harry Reid and Sharron Angle. But the fight wasn’t between the two candidates and it really wasn’t a debate. Sharron Angle was there to answer questions live, while Harry Reid appeared in a pre-taped video presentation.

The crowd was stacked against Angle, which this report from National Review Online makes clear. As Sharron Angle was making her closing remarks, Reid supporters rudely got up and began to leave. That’s when the fighting started.

In the past, people often attributed such violence to passionate youths – kids being kids. But this is beyond “youthful indiscretion.” Remember the hundreds of people arrested at the 2008 Republican National Convention? Remember the New Black Panthers in Philadelphia? Violence and intimidation are becoming standard practice for the Left as it attempts to shut down debate and drive men and women of faith out of the public square and into the closet.

Don’t be intimidated. Fight back by getting active!

Redouble your efforts in support of pro-family, pro-life, pro-free enterprise candidates and causes. Carol is doing her part by setting up a voter registration table at our church in early October, where she will help folks complete voter registration applications. Then she will take all the applications to the county voter registration office. If everyone does their part, just think of the tremendous difference we can make!

“A Pledge To America”

House Republicans today unveiled their much-anticipated Pledge To America, which many pundits are comparing to the 1994 Contract With America. With the elections now 40 days away, House Republicans understand that most voters want something to vote for; they want to know what the GOP would do differently.

Polls show that most Americans realize that the Obama socialists have led us down the wrong track. House Republicans have provided an outline of what they would do differently. On balance, I think it is a good document that outlines a conservative vision for putting America back on the right track.

The editors of National Review Online praised the pledge as “bolder” than the Contract With America, writing, “The pledge commits Republicans to working toward a broad conservative agenda that, if implemented, would make the federal government significantly smaller, Congress more accountable, and America more prosperous.”

As expected, the document is heavy on economic issues, and Republicans can’t be faulted for focusing on the voters’ main concerns – jobs and the economy. Here are some key objectives:

* extending the Bush tax cuts for all Americans, including entrepreneurs and small business owners

* terminating TARP

* freezing federal hiring

* rolling back spending to pre-stimulus levels

* cancelling any remaining stimulus spending

* repealing Obama’s takeover of healthcare

The pledge also promises to “honor families, traditional marriage, life, and the private and faith-based organizations that form the core of our American values.” In addition, the document promises to end taxpayer funding of abortion. We are gratified that congressional leaders like Rep. Mike Pence sought our input on these values issues and made sure they were included.

There is much more in the 20-page document, which you can read here.

Some media pundits are already attacking the pledge as not being detailed enough. But these are the same pundits who aren’t telling you that the Democrats still haven’t passed a budget yet. Why not? Because they don’t want you to know the budget details before the election!

ObamaCare: A Six-Month Check-Up

One of the first lessons everyone learns in life – sometimes the hard way – is that if something seems too good to be true, it probably is. Today marks the six-month anniversary of ObamaCare becoming law. As the law begins to take effect, many experts are now questioning whether its promises were too good to be true. Let’s consider some of those promises and what has actually happened.

* We were told that ObamaCare would lower healthcare costs. How many of you have seen your insurance rates decline? In fact, premiums are going up by double digits in many states, according to the New York Times, “largely to address the expanded benefits [that Obama/Reid/Pelosi mandated] under the new federal law.” You just can’t get something for nothing.

* We were told that ObamaCare would save the government money. But yet another report from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, a federal agency, finds that ObamaCare will in fact increase healthcare spending as it provides coverage to more than 30 million people. This should be no surprise. Obama’s claim that he could cover more people and still reduce costs was absurd.

* We were told that ObamaCare would cut the deficit over ten years. But this was based on unrealistic promises such as slashing $500 billion from Medicare and reducing payments to doctors by 20%. Few outside experts trust the cost projections and some suggest ObamaCare will cost nearly $2.7 trillion over the next ten years, adding hundreds of billions of dollars to the national debt.

* We were told that if you like your current coverage, you’ll get to keep it. But even the Obama Administration knows that is not true, estimating that as many as 67% of individual policies and 80% of small business policies will be forced to change as a result of the 3,000-page law.

ObamaCare is already costing jobs and contributing to the nation’s unemployment crisis. The New York Times reported yesterday that many insurance companies were “scrambling” to comply with the law, and many were cutting jobs to compensate for the costs associated with ObamaCare.

According to the Times report, “Adjusting to the new terrain could push some insurers out of business, health care analysts say. …many of the markets where they operate will become much less profitable. ‘A lot of health plans will struggle and fail,’ said Jeff Fusile, a health care partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers.”

Unfortunately, this is what happens when government mandates manipulate the free market, and it’s why command economies don’t work. Try as they might, liberal politicians simply cannot override the fundamental laws of economics.

Keep Working!

No doubt you’ve seen the polls on the elections. They look good, don’t they? Take them with a grain of salt, and don’t stop praying and working. Here’s why.

It is clear that 2010 is going to look a lot like 1994 – there is a growing backlash against the Democrats sweeping across America. But will it be enough? While the minority party almost always gains seats in mid-term elections, the average mid-term gain would not be enough to overcome the Democrats’ huge majority, even in the House. Some smart people are concerned we could fall short.

For example, the president of the Chamber of Commerce has said privately that he fears Republicans will end up three or four seats short, leaving Nancy Pelosi in the Speaker’s chair and Barack Obama setting the agenda. On his morning radio show, Bill Bennett asked Newt Gingrich about that prediction, and Newt replied, “It could be anywhere from 30 seats to 80 seats.” To off-set some anticipated losses, Republicans need to pick up at least 45 seats.

This is not meant to discourage you. No one should be throwing in the towel. I think Newt is right – we could pick up 80 seats – but only if we redouble our efforts today. How many friends and family members have you registered to vote? Use this link to sign them up.

There is a lot of controversy surrounding Barack Obama. But the average man and woman, like Velma Hart, is concerned about the policies coming out of Washington, D.C. They are furious about the out-of-control spending, the regulations and the tax hikes that will cripple businesses and cost even more jobs. They are worried about saving for the future, the assault on our values and America’s prestige in the world. Talk to them about these issues.

How many friends and family members have you registered to vote? Use this link to sign them up.

I continue to get questions about Christians who are confusing the gospel of Jesus Christ with Big Government socialism and social justice. They couldn’t be more wrong. Christ encouraged us to be compassionate to our neighbor; He did not argue that government should redistribute wealth. Christ never used class warfare. He never suggested that someone else was starving because another man was eating well. That is envy, and it is wrong.

Don’t waste your time trying to convert those who drank the Obama kool aid. There a lot of folks out there like Velma Hart who are exhausted and disappointed. Talk to them. Tell them, as Ronald Reagan understood, that government is not the solution to our problems, and that America’s best days are ahead of us if we will unleash the power of free markets and America’s entrepreneurial spirit.

Targeting The Tea Party

The New York Times recently reported that the White House and Democrat operatives were considering a major assault against the Tea Party as a way of energizing their demoralized base. Of course, they would portray the Tea Party as an extremist, fringe movement and warn of dire consequences if its candidates were elected to public office.

The White House denied the accuracy of the story, but the NAACP is working hard to pull off an October 2nd rally specifically aimed at countering the Tea Party movement. You may recall that the NAACP recently condemned the Tea Party as racist.

The list of sponsors for the October 2nd rally reads like a “whose who” of left-wing extremists. The usual suspects are all there – Big Labor, the teachers’ union, at least a dozen homosexual rights groups. Other partners include the Communist Party of the USA, Democratic Socialists of America and the radical anti-war groups Code Pink and ANSWER.

And these folks are calling the Tea Party extreme? This coalition is so “main-stream” that the leader of one sponsoring group was fired by the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights for his connections to the terrorist group Hamas. But, really, who do you think has more in common with the average Joe – the Tea Party or the group Queers for Economic Justice that is sponsoring the NAACP rally?

Obama’s Values

A recent poll found 46% of Americans don’t believe Barack Obama shares their values, while just 43% believe he does. This poll comes on the heels of others finding that more Americans today believe their president is a Muslim in spite of his non-stop exposure during the past 19 months. Why is the president so disconnected from the American people?

One reason is because he doesn’t speak to them. In a speech to the Hispanic Congressional Caucus this week, Obama cited the founding principle of America, telling his audience, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, endowed with certain inalienable rights: life and liberty and the pursuit of happiness.”

That famous line is found in the second paragraph of our Declaration of Independence, but the president made a glaring and probably intentional omission: He left out God.

I say the omission was intentional because this president is quite fond of claiming that we are not a Judeo-Christian nation and that Muslims were influential in our founding. And he frequently gives atheists and non-believers a “shout out” in his speeches.

I’m not the only one who has noticed this. Terry Jeffrey, editor of, devoted an entire column to Obama’s efforts to “diminish God's standing in America,” and I suspect most Americans don’t appreciate it.

By the way, Obama, who the media claims is the smartest man ever to sit in the Oval Office also told his audience that Mexicans were in America before our founding, even though Mexico didn’t become a country until the early 1800s, well after America achieved independence. But why nitpick over details about our history and founding?

Is Obama Hiding Something?

That’s the question asked today by Washington Post columnist David Ignatius, who notes that security at the CIA has been ramped up while top intelligence officials in Europe are scrambling. Meanwhile, there is silence from Obama.

Is something up? Bernard Squarcini, France's top counterterrorism official, said Saturday, “All the lights are red. They are flashing from everywhere… objectively, there are reasons for worry.” That’s a pretty serious statement.

Here is an Associated Press headline from yesterday: “Interpol Worried About Spike In Extremist Websites.” Over the weekend, I read a report that caught my attention: John Brennan, Obama’s National Security Advisor, and his Canadian counterpart were in Saudi Arabia days ago meeting with the king and the Saudi intelligence chief. Maybe it was just a routine courtesy visit. But the Ignatius column suggests it could be much more.

While we cannot live in a constant state of fear, we know this administration is na├»ve about national security. It dares not speak the word “terrorism,” instead preferring euphemisms like “man-caused disasters.” It thinks jihad is a noble term. It is reaching out to our enemies in Iran, while pressuring Israel to make concessions for peace. But surely if we were at risk, we’d be hearing from the White House, rather than the Washington Post, right?

Obama Supporters “Exhausted”

Yesterday President Obama faced his toughest critics – the American people. The town hall meeting on the economy organized by the financial news network CNBC was a highly choreographed event. Virtually everyone there was an Obama supporter, which is why what happened yesterday is so indicative of the problem President Obama and the Democrats are confronting in the polls.

When the president finished his opening remarks and turned the floor over to the audience, the very first question he took was from Velma Hart. Here’s what she said:

“I am a chief financial officer for a veterans service organization … and I’m one of your middle-class Americans. And quite frankly, I’m exhausted. I’m exhausted of defending you, defending your administration, defending the mantle of change that I voted for and deeply disappointed with where we are right now.

“I have been told that I voted for a man who said he was going to change things in a meaningful way for the middle class. I’m one of those people, and I’m waiting, sir. I’m waiting. I don’t feel it yet.”
Velma had a lot more to say, and you can watch it here. But what Velma may not understand is that Obama HAS changed things for the middle class only for the worse.

The president cited healthcare “reform” and new financial regulations aimed at credit card companies as examples of what he’s done for middle-class Americans. Let’s consider that. These programs will cost tremendous amounts of money, and there isn’t enough to pay for it all, even if they confiscated every dime from the “rich.” As for credit card “reform,” the end result will be that many Americans, including some small business owners, won’t be able to get credit or, if they can, it will cost them much more.

While unemployment is on the rise, the administration is waging war against the energy industry by raising taxes on oil and natural gas companies, shutting down deepwater drilling and issuing so many new regulations that coal mining jobs are disappearing.

Barack The Tea Partier

For a brief moment yesterday, I thought the president had decided to try out a new line of work as a stand up comedian. While the high point of the town hall event was Velma Hart’s question, the low point was Obama’s attempt to disguise himself as a supporter of the Tea Party.

When asked how he might respond to recommendations from the Debt Commission, Obama said, “We’ve already identified $250 billion in cuts on the discretionary side of our budget. … We’ve proposed to freeze discretionary spending for three years, to start whittling down some of the debt that I inherited.”

The idea that this president is cutting spending and that he inherited this debt is laughable. As I wrote in this report two weeks ago, government data confirm that Barack Obama added more debt in his first 19 months in office than did all the administrations from Washington to Reagan combined!

In just four months – May, June, July and August of this year – Obama added $464 billion to the national debt. By comparison, the Bush Administration racked up $458 billion in debt in fiscal 2008. In other words, Obama is spending money three times faster than George W. Bush! Bush’s deficit spending was unacceptable, but Obama’s deficits leave Bush in the dust. If you are a visual learner, click here to see a comparison of Bush’s and Obama’s spending.

Barack The Tax Hiker

At yesterday’s economic forum, President Obama was asked about a potential compromise to avoid the looming tax hikes that will be produced when the Bush tax cuts expire at the end of the year. Rather than seeking middle ground, Obama let his redistributionist instincts slip out.

Responding to a question about extending the Bush tax cuts, Obama answered, “But here’s what I can’t do. I can’t give tax cuts to the top 2 percent of Americans, 86 percent of that money going to people making a million dollars or more…”

That remark earned the president a stiff rebuke from MSNBC’s Hardball host Chris Matthews, who obviously isn’t looking forward to paying Obama’s higher taxes. Here’s what Matthews said:

“I have one small tweak to make to what the president said today -- he should stop saying that giving people tax cuts is giving people money. It’s their money! A tax cut is when the government doesn’t take our money. …[Obama] talked today, for example, about people getting a check from the government in the form of a tax cut. That’s not the way it works. If tax rates are kept lower, it’s a matter of the check going to the government being smaller. Again, it’s an important distinction.”
That is also an important distinction between the parties. Democrats think that all money belongs to the government, and that the only question up for debate is how much of it the government will let you keep. Republicans believe you should keep what you earn and that individuals and free markets redistribute wealth more efficiently and productively than Big Government does.

Senate Republicans Stand With Marines

Senate liberals today lost a vote to allow open homosexuals to serve in the military. Top military officials have repeatedly expressed their opposition to Congress’ meddling, and this morning Marine General James Amos, President Obama’s nominee to be the next Marine Corps Commandant, also weighed in during testimony before the Senate’s Armed Services Committee.

General Amos told the Committee, “In my personal view, the current law and associated policy have supported the unique requirements of the Marine Corps, and thus I do not recommend its repeal.” He added that Marine input from an online survey regarding Congress’ plan to allow open homosexuality in the military “has been predominantly negative.”

General Amos also told senators that changing the policy now would “serve as a distraction to Marines who are tightly focused at this point on combat operations in Afghanistan.” None of this, however, swayed Senate Democrats, 54 of whom voted against the general’s advice and the predominant view of our Marines.

Democrats Holding Our Troops Hostage

The Senate will vote this week on legislation funding the Pentagon, our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan as well as other vital national security issues. But, just as he did last year with the hate crimes bill, Harry Reid is holding our troops hostage to his left-wing agenda.

Reid plans to attach two amendments to this year’s defense bill – one lifting the ban on abortions at military hospitals and the other repealing the military’s “Don’t Ask/Don’t Tell” policy. It is disgraceful that Harry Reid and other Senate liberals are advancing their radical left-wing agenda on the backs of our men and women in uniform.

Worse, they are doing so without even considering the opinions of our troops. The Pentagon has sent a survey to active duty personnel regarding “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” and will review the policy after receiving the survey results at the end of the year. Secretary of Defense Gates and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Mike Mullen have asked Congress to wait for the feedback of our troops before acting. In a letter to Capitol Hill, Gates and Mullen stated bluntly:

“[We] strongly oppose any legislation that seeks to change this policy prior to the completion of this vital assessment process. …[we] hope Congress will not do so as it would send a very damaging message to our men and women in uniform that in essence their views, concerns and perspectives do not matter on an issue with such a direct impact and consequence for them and their families.”
But it’s no secret why it is happening now. With just 43 days left until the elections, Democrats are desperate to motivate their base. So Reid is pandering to the pro-abortion crowd and militant homosexual rights movement at the expense of our troops.

ACTION ITEM: Call your senators right now at 202-224-3121. Tell them to respect our soldiers and to oppose efforts to advance abortion and homosexual rights in the defense bill.

A Victory For Social Conservatives

Recently, we told you that House Republican leaders were going to present a new policy roadmap or governing agenda. All reports indicated that values issues would be left off the agenda. So we asked folks to sign our petition calling on the GOP to aggressively defend traditional values.

I spoke directly with top Republican leaders, and we presented thousands of your petitions to their offices. I’m pleased to report that your voice has been heard. The breaking news is that values issues will be included in the GOP’s governing agenda. Thank you, my friends, for speaking up for faith, family and freedom!

President Pence?

The 2010 Values Voter Summit was a tremendous success. One of the most well-received speeches came from my friend Rep. Mike Pence (R-IN), who rallied men and women of faith to fight on in America’s cultural war. Invoking the tragedy of slavery and the Civil War, Rep. Pence reminded the audience, “Those who would have us ignore the battle being fought over life, marriage and religious liberty have forgotten the lessons of history. As in the days of a house divided, America’s darkest moments have come when economic arguments trumped moral principles.”

The folks there took his message to heart – Rep. Pence won the straw poll, beating out such heavyweights as Mike Huckabee, Sarah Palin, Newt Gingrich, Mitt Romney and other well-known figures. In fact, Summit attendees appreciated Rep. Pence’s message so much that he also won the vice presidential straw poll.

It’s not hard to appreciate why folks at the Summit would embrace Mike Pence. I’ve known Mike for many years, even before he was in Congress, and he has always been a Ronald Reagan conservative. He understands the three pillars of our movement – economic, defense and social conservatism. He is young and articulate and does not run from our issues.

Pence’s surprising and encouraging victory at the Values Voter Summit mirrors the success of the Tea Party this year, and suggests that many Americans are yearning for new leadership from individuals who are not necessarily in the news or talked about every day by the pundits. Trust me – you’ll be hearing a lot more about - and from - Mike Pence in the days ahead.

Barack Obama’s Favorite Republican

Democrats are on the verge of an electoral abyss, and most analysts believe that Nancy Pelosi’s days as Speaker are coming to an end. So Democrats are trying to build a firewall in the Senate. Harry Reid may not be coming back as Majority Leader, but if the Democrats can hold enough seats, they might maintain a slim majority. Believe it or not, there’s one Republican candidate Barack Obama’s is rooting for. No, it’s not Delaware’s Christine O’Donnell. It’s Alaska’s Lisa Murkowski.

Murkowski recently lost the Republican primary to conservative Joe Miller. To Barack Obama’s delight, she isn’t going away gracefully. She’s launched a write-in campaign for the general election. The odds are overwhelmingly against her, but Murkowski is putting her own ambition ahead of the greater good of our country. She’s attacking Joe Miller, a West Point graduate, as an extremist, parroting Democrat talking points. Her slash-and-burn approach could divide conservatives, split the vote and help elect a Democrat.

If Murkowski really were a committed Republican, she would realize that stopping the Obama/Reid agenda is the most important priority. If she doesn’t get that, then it shows just how right conservatives were in defeating her in the primary.

GOP Establishment, RIP?

The Tea Party movement has attracted millions of new voters (as well as millions of formerly disaffected Republican voters) to the GOP. And all that Tea Party members ask of the GOP is that it acts according to its own principles by supporting lower taxes, fiscal responsibility and less government. So why are many in the Republican establishment recoiling in horror at the most powerful new force politics has seen in at least a decade? I tackle that question in my latest Human Events column, which you can read here.

The Clock Is Ticking

I was on Capitol Hill yesterday encouraging Republican leaders to embrace the entire conservative agenda – lower taxes, smaller government, strong national defense, secure borders, respect for life and traditional marriage. I’m heading out of the office to go to the Values Voter Summit to inspire conservative, pro-family activists to do more in defense of faith, family and freedom. (You can watch the Summit on C-Span or click here to view it online.)

We’re now in the final stretch of the 2010 campaign to get our nation back on track. The next 45 days will be brutal. One leftwing organization has launched a website attacking me and Bill Kristol. The Left is desperate, and it will do anything it can to demoralize us, undermine our efforts and smear our candidates – and they have millions to spend. They may have the money, but we’ve got the momentum!

So, here’s my challenge to you: Whatever you are doing now, double it! If you’ve registered two friends or family members to vote, find four more and get them registered. (Use this link to get folks registered online.)

If you’ve volunteered five hours of time to conservative candidates in recent weeks, give 10 hours in the next 45 days. If you’ve donated money to conservative candidates and causes, give more if you can.

If you’ve talked to your pastor once about voter registration drives or speaking about values issues from the pulpit, talk to him again. If you plan to take two voters to the polls on Election Day, take four. Working together, we can take America back!

What A Waste!

We’re learning more and more about the many ways Washington has wasted your hard-earned tax dollars in the so-called stimulus bill. Just consider the recent audit from Los Angeles City Comptroller Wendy Greuel. In her 40-page report, Greuel wrote, “I'm disappointed that we've only created or retained 55 jobs after receiving $111 million." Greuel may be disappointed, but I’m furious! That’s $2 million per job! And here’s another outrageous example of how $800,000 of your money was wasted.

What did we get for it? After hundreds of billions of dollars in stimulus spending, the unemployment rate today is even higher. The poverty rate is at its highest level in decades. Clearly more spending and bigger government isn’t the solution.

But back in Washington, Barack Obama and Nancy Pelosi are digging their heels in when it comes to tax cuts for small business owners. The liberal Democrats claim we can’t afford to let entrepreneurs and job creators keep more of their hard-earned income, but they have no problem with Washington wasting it.

In 2008, Americans voted for hope and change. But as the polls indicate, they now realize we’ve been led down the wrong track. It’s time for new solutions that will bring real hope and meaningful change.

We The People

On this day 223 years ago, the Constitution of the United States was signed by our Founding Fathers after risking their lives, fortunes and sacred honor to win our independence. That remarkable document is a testament to their wisdom, which few in Washington seem to hold in high regard today. Given the state of our nation, it is imperative that we return to the principles our Founding Fathers cherished – limited government, individual freedom and respect for traditional values.

Tomorrow, Americans all across the country will rededicate themselves to those very principles by reading the Constitution at events coast-to-coast. I urge you to join in. Click here to learn more.

Day Of Atonement

At sundown today, Jews all over the world will observe Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the Jewish calendar, and seek the Lord’s forgiveness. Carol and I join our Jewish friends in solemn reflection as we pray for His blessings in the year ahead.

Whose Civil War?

The front page of today’s Washington Post features a major story about the civil war within the conservative movement between the Republican Party and the Tea Party. The Post is almost gleeful in reporting the “spasm of recriminations” between Karl Rove and Rush Limbaugh.

As usual, Big Media is blinded by its own bias. There is a real civil war raging inside the Democrat Party right now, but the Post doesn’t want you to know about that. Let’s consider two issues in the headlines – taxes and ObamaCare.

The Republican Party is united in preventing major tax hikes next year. But at least five Democrat senators want the tax cuts extended. Last night, CNN reported that 31 House Democrats sent a letter to Speaker Nancy Pelosi stating, “raising any taxes right now could negatively impact economic growth.”

ObamaCare, which was supposed to be such a monumental accomplishment that it would allow Democrats to control Congress for generations, is turning out be a curse. According to an analysis of campaign ads, Democrat candidates are spending three times as much money running ads AGAINST ObamaCare as they are spending on ads in support of ObamaCare. Yesterday, Rep. Gene Taylor of Mississippi became the first House Democrat to sign on to legislation that would repeal ObamaCare. And to top it all off, a Democrat congressional candidate in Tennessee held a press conference today calling on Nancy Pelosi to resign!

Democrats are in the throes of an identity crisis, but the media are obsessing about Republican candidates who champion lower taxes, less spending, smaller government and respect for traditional values – the ideas that “radical” Ronald Reagan talked about all the time.

Senator John Cornyn put it well yesterday when he suggested that if the media think the Tea Party activists are upset with the Republican establishment, just wait 47 days and see how upset they are with the Democrat establishment!

Michelle’s Misery

A new book about French First Lady Carla Bruni suggests that Michelle Obama is miserable in the White House. According to the report, when the French first couple visited the White House last March, Bruni asked Michelle what it was like to be America’s First Lady. Michelle’s response: “Don’t ask! It’s hell. I can’t stand it!” That trip to Spain seemed really rough!

The White House and the French Embassy are denying the quote, but given the way Barack Obama has whined about being president and blamed everyone else for the his problems, it wouldn’t surprise me if there were some truth to it. And it smacks of the same liberal elitism when Michelle said in 2008, “For the first time in my adult lifetime, I’m really proud of my country.”

Whether or not Michelle is miserable in the White House, we’ll do everything we can in the next two years to make sure the Obamas’ lease on 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue ends in 2012.

Religion Of Peace Strikes Again

A Seattle-based cartoonist has gone into hiding at the urging of the FBI. Why? Because an increasingly influential cleric of the “religion of peace” put her on a hit list.

According to Fox News, cartoonist Molly Norris of the Seattle Weekly decided to protest Comedy Central’s cancellation of a South Park show that mocked Muhammad by drawing a cartoon suggesting May 20th be declared “Everybody Draw Muhammad Day!” For exercising her free speech rights, Yemeni cleric Anwar al-Awlaki declared that Norris “should be taken as a prime target of assassination.”

He also instructed Muslims in America to wage jihad, writing, “with the defamation of Muhammad reaching the shores of America, I wonder whether the patriotic American Muslim will still have the audacity to claim that he enjoys the right to be a Muslim in America? Does he understand that this right includes his duty to fight against those who blaspheme his Prophet?”

And by “fighting” al-Awlaki wasn’t speaking rhetorically. He wrote that “assassinations, bombings and acts of arson” were proper responses to blasphemy.

The FBI is taking al-Awlaki’s threat seriously. After all, this man of “peace” inspired Ft. Hood shooter Nidal Hasan, the plot to bomb Times Square and other acts of terror. Yesterday the Seattle Weekly printed this explanation for the absence of Molly Norris’ work:

“You may have noticed that Molly Norris’ comic is not in the paper this week. That’s because there is no more Molly. The gifted artist is alive and well, thankfully. But on the insistence of top security specialists at the FBI, she is, as they put it, ‘going ghost’: moving, changing her name, and essentially wiping away her identity. She is, in effect, being put into a witness-protection program…”

The Results

The primary season came to a dramatic close last night as Tea Party-backed conservatives upset establishment candidates in major races in Delaware and New York.

In Delaware, the GOP establishment insisted that in order to win a majority in the Senate, Republicans had to support Mike Castle in spite of his liberal record on abortion, cap and trade and other issues. Delaware Republicans obviously disagreed. Last night they retired Mike Castle, ending his 44-year career in public service, and nominated conservative Christine O’Donnell for the United States Senate.

Inexplicably, Karl Rove attacked O’Donnell on Fox News last night once it was clear she would be the Republican nominee and wrote off the Delaware Senate contest. How can it be important to back the left-leaning Republican (Castle) in the primary, but not important to back the conservative Republican (O’Donnell) in the general election?

To make matters worse, staff at the National Republican Senatorial Committee last night childishly suggested that they would not lift a finger to help O’Donnell. The blowback must have been intense. This morning, NRSC Chairman John Cornyn said that his committee would “strongly stand by all of our Republican nominees, including Christine O’Donnell,” and that it was sending the maximum contribution to her campaign.

In the New York primary for governor, the establishment favorite was Rick Lazio, a former congressman who ten years ago ran against Hillary Clinton for the U.S. Senate. While Lazio was not as liberal as Castle, he ran a lackluster campaign and reluctantly engaged on the Ground Zero mosque controversy. In contrast, his opponent, businessman Carl Paladino, seized on the issue with passion, and the voters responded.

Thankfully, the primaries are over. I say “thankfully” because many D.C. insiders were starting to lose perspective, growing fearful of the Tea Party and scornful of its candidates. This is a mistake. Millions of conservative activists are getting involved in politics, and the GOP should be applauding them!

Speak Up For Our Values!

In a recent Human Events column, I wrote about efforts to water down the Republican agenda by ignoring values issues. Two weeks ago, I told you that I was personally appealing to the Republican congressional leadership not to abandon an important constituency in the conservative coalition.

ACTION ITEM: Now it’s your turn to make your voice heard. Click here to sign our petition urging Republican leaders to defend traditional values just as aggressively as the Democrats attack them.

We will deliver this petition to Chairman Steele, Senator McConnell and Rep. Boehner in the days ahead. Please share this link with like-minded friends and family members and encourage them to add their names too. The more folks who sign, the greater our impact will be.

A Taxing Debate

Today’s Wall Street Journal reports that all Senate Republicans are standing firm – so far – in seeking an extension of all the Bush tax cuts. They are joined by five Democrats, meaning that at least 46 senators want to prevent Obama, Pelosi and Reid from enacting major tax hikes on January 1, 2011.

There are nine senators up for re-election this year who have previously expressed support for letting the Bush tax cuts expire. They are: Bennet (D-CO), Boxer (D-CA), Feingold (D-WI), Gillibrand (D-NY), Lincoln (D-AR), Murray (D-WA), Reid (D-NV), Schumer (D-NY) and Wyden (D-OR). If these senators get their way, many small business owners will be sending more money to Washington next year, rather than creating new jobs.

If you live in one of these nine states, please call your senators today at 202-224-3121. Urge them to make job creation their number one priority by opposing tax increases on the entrepreneurs who create jobs.

Obama’s Commitment To Jobs

Miners are rallying on Capitol Hill today, desperately trying to draw attention to the Obama Administration’s war on coal. Coal supplies half of our nation’s electricity and provides tens of thousands of jobs. It is one natural resource that America has in abundance.

But just like the ban on deepwater oil drilling in the Gulf of Mexico, the Obama Administration’s ideologically-driven policies are killing mining jobs in half a dozen Appalachian states. Families and entire communities in some of the poorest regions of the country are suffering as a result. You can read more about this issue here.

While the rally on Capitol Hill is a good idea, here’s a better one: Just as Scott Brown took the Senate seat held by Ted Kennedy, West Virginians should elect Republican John Raese to serve out the remainder of Robert Byrd’s Senate term. A Republican sitting in Byrd’s old seat – now that would get Washington’s attention!

Castro Says: “Communism Doesn’t Work”

Cuba’s retired dictator Fidel Castro made headlines recently for telling an American reporter, “The Cuban model [communism] doesn’t even work for us anymore.” He has since recanted somewhat – insisting that he meant that capitalism doesn’t work for America either. But as the saying goes, actions speak louder than words.

Yesterday the Cuban government announced that it will lay off 500,000 workers from the state’s payroll. The Wall Street Journal reports that just over 5.5 million Cubans, or 85% of all workers, are employed by the government. So, after admitting that the communist model is no longer working for Cuba, the government is laying off 10% of its workforce.

Reading this story reminded me of another report last year about the “wonders” of the “worker’s paradise” – a toilet paper shortage. That might make singer Sheryl Crow happy, but I suspect most Americans would prefer to keep their capitalist toilet paper.

All joking aside, there is a serious lesson to be learned here: The size and scope of government directly affects our standard of living. The bigger government gets, the more resources it demands. The more resources (taxes) it takes from you, the less you have to spend on yourself and your family. And as Cuba is learning the hard way, without a vibrant private sector, no public sector employee can be paid.

I hope the politicians in Washington are paying attention. With socialist experiments in Big Government collapsing in Europe and Cuba, Congress is back in session this week and, as you may have noticed, taxes are dominating the debate.

Re-Learning Our History; Saving Our Republic

A recent Gallup poll found that only one of the major initiatives passed by this Congress or promoted by the administration enjoy broad popular support. Sixty-one percent of the public approves of the financial reform bill. But only 43% approved of the stimulus bill and the auto bailout bill. And an even smaller share (39%) approved of the healthcare “reform” law.

But one positive side effect of the national debate over healthcare reform is that many Americans have become interested in public policy for the first time. Is healthcare a right? What is the proper role of government? How much government can we afford?

These are great questions, and that’s why I want to encourage everyone receiving this report to read the Constitution this Saturday, September 18th. You won’t be alone. In fact, there are more than 106 events planned across the country this weekend where the Constitution will be read. Click here to find out if there’s an event in your area. If not, please consider hosting an event.

The Next Step

Being informed is an important first step in exercising your rights as an American citizen. Perhaps our most precious constitutional right is the right to vote, and there is a very important election coming up in less than 50 days. But before you can vote, you must register to vote.

The voter registration deadline is October 4th in most states. So if you are not yet registered to vote, please do so today. Click here to register online. It’s quick and easy. And be certain to share this link with like-minded friends and family members who may not be registered to vote.

9/11 Nine Years Later

At Ground Zero in New York, at the Pentagon and in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, where United Flight 93 was brought down, Americans gathered on Saturday to mark the ninth anniversary of the Islamic jihadist attack on America. Fox News devoted most of Saturday to coverage of the ceremonies. It also played a montage of clips from its broadcast in 2001 as the events of that terrible day unfolded before a shocked nation.

There have been a lot of shocks in the last nine years. We have seen beheadings, attacks on civilians and bombings in cities like London and Madrid. We witnessed the Thanksgiving attack in Mumbai, India, the attempted Christmas eve bombing as well as dozens of plots uncovered around the globe.

We have seen acid thrown in the faces of Afghan girls, and Palestinian mothers celebrate the deaths of their children who chose to be homicide bombers to kill Jews. We watched a man wearing the uniform of the United States Army walk into a Fort Hood processing center and kill 13 soldiers and an unborn child. We know this enemy plans even greater sorrows for us and for free men and women everywhere.

In every one of these cases and in hundreds of others too numerous to list, the attackers have operated in the name of their Islamic faith. If they were not Muslims, the 19 hijackers on 9/11 would not have been on the planes.

Yet our president and his media allies continue to deny this truth, while they continually lecture us on what they call on our lack of tolerance. I don’t think the country is buying it. In fact, I think America is running out of patience with a president who shows real passion only when he defends Muslim rights.

Imam Feisal’s Friend: “9/11 An Inside Job”

The New York Post reports today that a close associate of Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf, who is pushing the Ground Zero mosque, believes that 9/11 was “an inside job.” In 1997, Rauf founded the American Society for Muslim Advancement (ASMA). ASMA and the Cordoba Initiative (another of Rauf’s organizations) are spearheading the drive to raise $100 million for the proposed 13-story Ground Zero mosque.

Faiz Khan was one of the founding board members of the ASMA Faiz Khan. Khan has preached at least twice to the Islamists who currently meet at the abandoned Burlington Coat Factory building, where Rauf plans his mosque. Why is Rauf’s relationship with Khan significant? Khan is a board member of Muslims for 9/11 Truth and a founder of the Muslim-Jewish-Christian Alliance for 9/11 Truth.

On the latter’s website, Khan wrote, “The prime factor for the success of the criminal mission known as 9/11 did not come from the quarter known as ‘militant Islam,’ although the phenomenon known as ‘militant Islamic networks’ may have played a partial role, or even a less than partial role -- perhaps the role of patsy and scapegoat.” So, if Islamists didn’t attack us who did?

In 2006, Khan insisted that the 9/11 hijackers were working for American business interests, and he said that Citicorp and Procter & Gamble were reaping billions from the heroine trade. When the New York Post contacted Khan about his remarks, he did not back down, saying, “I am certain of a few things. . . The towers and WTC 7 could not have collapsed without controlled demolition place[d] from the inside.”

So the “moderate” Imam Rauf is partnering with a man who believes America attacked itself on 9/11. Is this the type of insanity that will be taught at the mosque at Ground Zero in the name of “tolerance”?

Obama’s Commitment To Jobs

After a nearly $900-billion stimulus bill, 19 months on the job and rising unemployment, President Obama last week conceded that the economy is not where it should be. Unfortunately, there is more evidence that the policies coming out of Washington are counterproductive to economic growth.

For example, the Obama administration wants to repeal two tax measures that benefit the energy industry. Professor Joseph Mason of Louisiana State University has run the proposed tax changes through the Commerce Department's economic models and found that we could “almost immediately lose more than 150,000 stable, private-sector jobs.” You can read Professor Mason’s analysis here.

Meanwhile, the energy industry and Gulf coast states continue to be harmed by the administration’s continued ban on deep water oil drilling. Adding insult to injury is the news that your tax dollars are providing loans for Mexico’s state-owned oil company to drill in the Gulf.

Do Social Issues Still Matter?

The final sprint to Election Day is underway, and many Republicans are making the familiar argument that the election should be about one thing: the economy. But they should reject the advice to focus only on pocketbook issues.

Instead, as I write in my column for Human Events today, Republicans should highlight the Democrats’ dreadful record in all policy areas, including on the values issues that continue to inspire and motivate millions of voters. You can read my piece here.

Yesterday, Pastor Terry Jones of Gainesville, Florida, backed off from his pledge to burn Korans on 9/11. Others in at least three states are now promising to follow through if Jones does not. I’ve already made the point that this tactic is stupid. There are two wars going on – one on battlefields and one for hearts and minds. You don’t win the latter war when you engage in offensive tactics. Instead of burning the Koran, I recommend that he read passages from it and then ask Muslims if they embrace those passages that urge violence against non-believers.

Having said that, it is equally disgusting to see the president, the FBI and others embracing what amounts to jihadist extortion. Here’s what I mean: Jones was threatening to burn a Koran and if he does we’re being told there will be violence against America all over the world. It is one thing to say this is a bad idea. But it’s another thing to use this threat of mayhem as a justification for denying Pastor Jones’ First Amendment rights.

There is no justification for others to engage in “holy war” as a result of the burning of a Koran. In no normal arena, in no normal culture can there be equivalency between an offensive symbolic act and the killing of human beings. And the president of all people should be making that case.

How many Christians rioted, how many people died when our tax dollars were used to put a crucifix in a vat of urine? (Perhaps the Left would be applauding Pastor Jones if he had requested a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.) How many Buddhists rioted when the Taliban blew up the Bamiyan Buddahs? Where was the outrage when Hamas militants burned Bibles and crosses in Gaza?

Rather than kowtowing to extremists, President Obama should have denounced the burning of any religious text. But he also should have forcefully condemned the threats of violence and promised swift retaliation if American lives are threatened.

This pastor has a congregation that is smaller than Michelle Obama’s staff. But he has raised an issue that is much bigger and far more important than the ill-advised burning of a Koran - the violent propensity of so many adherents of the “religion of peace.”

On the one hand, we’re constantly being told that Islam is a religion of peace. On the other hand, public officials from the president down are gripped by fear over the potential reaction of Muslims if a Koran is burned. And seeing our weakness, Imam Feisal Rauf has now elevated his planned Ground Zero mega-mosque to the level of a national security issue. He told CNN this week that if the mosque has to move, American blood might be spilled. Here’s what he said:

“If we move from that location, the story will be that the radicals have taken over the discourse. The headlines in the Muslim world will be that Islam is under attack. …if we do move, it will strengthen the argument of the radicals to recruit, their ability to recruit, and their increasing aggression and violence against our country. …our national security now hinges on how we negotiate this, how we speak about it, and what we do. …

“If you don’t do this right, anger will explode in the Muslim world. If this is not handled correctly, this crisis could become much bigger than the Danish cartoon crisis… If we don't handle this crisis correctly, it could become something which could really become very, very, very dangerous indeed.”
So now we must build a mosque at Ground Zero and if we don’t, Muslims will riot and murder. If we burn a Koran, Muslims will riot and murder. If we print cartoons, Muslims will riot and murder. Where does it end? When we retreat from the Middle East? When we abandon Israel? When America bows to Mecca?

By the way, a federal judge yesterday struck down the military’s “Don’t ask, Don’t Tell” policy. In some Islamic nations, homosexuality is punishable by death. Can you imagine what the reaction of America’s elites would be if we said that open homosexuality in the U.S. military would enrage the Muslim world?

ACLU Embraces Right To Life

Now I’ve seen it all. The American Civil Liberties Union has embraced the right to life. In a brief filed before a federal court in the District of Columbia, the ACLU states, “The right to life is the most fundamental of all rights. Outside of the context of armed conflict, the intentional use of lethal force … is an abridgement of this right, except in the narrowest and most extraordinary circumstances.”

Sounds great, right? The problem is that the ACLU isn’t defending babies in the womb, but the right to life of terrorists who are targeted by the CIA. That’s right – the ACLU is suing to shut down our attempts to take out terrorists and citing the “fundamental right to life.”

Feds Not Paying Their Fair Share

Here’s a story that will raise your blood pressure. According to the Washington Post, federal workers – the folks whose salaries are paid with your tax dollars – owe nearly $1 billion in back taxes. More than 600 workers on Capitol Hill together owe more than $9 million, while 41 White House staffers combined owe Uncle Sam more than $800,000.

More than 1,200 workers at the Treasury Department, which oversees the IRS, owe more than $7.6 million in back taxes. And while the Justice Department is investigating Arizona, perhaps it should investigate its 1,971 employees who owe more than $14.3 million in taxes.

Obama’s U.N. Bow

The Obama Administration’s approach to foreign policy requires a passionate embrace of moral equivalence. And, as I explain in my Human Events column this week, nowhere is that approach more demonstrably corrupt than in the administration’s actions on the United Nations Human Rights Council. You can read my piece here.

National Debt A National Threat

It’s not every day that Hillary Clinton says something I agree with, but yesterday she hit a rhetorical home run. In an address outlining the foreign policy challenges confronting the country, Secretary of State Clinton highlighted a domestic issue – our growing national debt. Here is an excerpt of her speech:

“[our debt] undermines our capacity to act in our own interest. And it does constrain us where constraint may be undesirable. And it also sends a message of weakness internationally. I mean, it is very troubling to me that we are losing the ability not only to chart our own destiny, but to, you know, have the leverage that comes from this enormously effective economic engine that has powered American values and interests over so many years.”
I couldn’t agree more. But has she noticed that she works for the man most responsible for the debt crisis?

S.O.S – Stop Obama’s Spending!

According to new government data, Barack Obama has added more debt in his first 19 months in office than was accumulated over the first two hundred years of America’s existence - or all administrations from Washington to Reagan combined! Terry Jeffrey of analyzed the data in a column, which you can read here.

In his economic address yesterday, Obama returned to the theme of bashing Bush, blaming the current economic problems on the past, and insisted that “we can’t afford the price tag” to extend all the Bush tax cuts. As conservatives have argued for decades, Washington’s problem is not revenue, but spending.

In his analysis, Jeffrey also includes this shocking statistic: “In just the last four months (May through August), according to the CBO, the Obama administration has run cumulative deficits of $464 billion, more than the $458 billion deficit the Bush administration ran through the entirety of fiscal 2008.” If you are a visual learner, click here to see a comparison of Bush’s and Obama’s spending.

It is odd how liberals like Barack Obama say the government can’t afford to let you keep more of what you earn but never worry about the price tag of their own spending. What about the $830 billion price tag of Obama’s socialized medicine scheme? What about the $862 billion price tag of Obama’s failed stimulus plan?

How Low Can He Go?

The latest Rasmussen daily tracking poll finds President Obama’s approval rating hitting a new low of just 41%, while 58% of likely voters disapprove of his performance. The transformation of Obama’s presidency has been astonishing. He came into office with sky-high approval ratings, the adulation of a fawning media, the goodwill of the American people and super-majorities in both houses of Congress.

But Obama and his liberal allies quickly became victims of their own pride. They talked about the “fundamental transformation of America,” declared “We are the ones we have waited for” and promised to “heal the planet and slow the rise of the oceans.” They believed their own propaganda and set out to ram their agenda down our throats.

Their arrogance was stunning. Nancy Pelosi insisted “We have to pass [ObamaCare] so you can find out what is in it.” She called her critics – the American people – “un-American.” Even as New Jersey, Virginia and, of all places, Massachusetts went from Blue to Red, the people and the polls were ignored. Obama told worried Democrats on Capitol Hill, “the big difference here and in ’94 [is] you’ve got me.”

Well, today the man who once had crowds swooning can’t even fill a room. The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports that one hour before Obama’s big speech yesterday, organizers were scrambling to round up college students to fill scores of empty seats. And Time writes that Obama’s vaunted volunteer army has deserted him.

What YOU Can Do!

While the tide of public opinion has turned against Obama, this election isn’t over yet. The most important poll won’t take place until November 2nd, and a lot can change in the next 54 days. If the Democrats know how to do one thing it is to turn out their voters on Election Day. What can you do to defend our values?

Please share this report with friends and family members. Talk to your neighbors, co-workers and fellow worshippers. Make sure every like-minded person you know is registered to vote. If they are not, they can do so quickly and easily at our website.

The voter registration deadline in most states is fast approaching, so please encourage anyone who isn’t registered to do so today.

The “Hate-filled” U.S.A.?

Is a frenzy of anti-Muslim bigotry and hatred gripping America? You would think so judging by the fevered reaction to a few isolated but highly publicized incidents.

In recent weeks a drunk stabbed a Muslim cab driver in New York. There was arson at a construction site in Tennessee where a mosque is planned. And a minister of a church in Florida with 50 members has threatened to burn some Korans. The pastor was roundly condemned today by a coalition of Christian, Jewish and Muslim groups. All of this took place after the American public reacted very negatively to the proposal to build a mosque at Ground Zero in New York.

Reaction to these events has been swift. The Florida pastor has been denounced by White House spokesman Robert Gibbs, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and General David Petraeus. Muslim leaders are insisting that Attorney General Eric Holder speak out against the incidents and prosecute the people involved under federal hate crime laws. It would have been gratifying to see a similar outpouring of concern about hate when unarmed Christian medical workers were brutally murdered a few weeks ago in Afghanistan by the Taliban, which claimed (falsely) that the workers were promoting Christianity.

A spokesman for Muslim Advocates, sort of an Islamic ACLU, said strong action is needed to counter the “sense of fear and anxiety, (among U.S. Muslims) even more than after 9/11.” I can assure Muslim advocates that they weren’t the only folks feeling anxiety after 9/11.

For the record, the New York drunk and the Tennessee arsonist should be prosecuted to the full extent of our laws. The Florida pastor needs a lecture on why book burning is offensive and unlikely to win hearts and minds. It is worth pointing out, however, that burning a Koran or a Bible is legal, and the Supreme Court has ruled that burning the American flag is legal too. But in many Islamic countries, there are no Bibles to burn because they are banned, and burning a Koran would earn you a death sentence.

The “frenzy” of anti-Muslim hysteria that Big Media and Muslim “victim” groups claim is descending upon America is simply a lie.

Muslims in the U.S. are not oppressed. There are hundreds of mosques being built all over the country. Has anyone checked how many of those mosques are teaching the Saudi Wahhabi brand of Islam? Their religious liberty is not in jeopardy in America, although sadly the religious liberty of non-Muslims is non-existent in most majority Muslim countries around the world.

Our children are not being taught to hate Muslims. In fact, in too many U.S. textbooks the bloody history of Islamic expansion over the centuries is being white-washed. Muslims are not being attacked on the streets of America’s cities. In fact, hate crimes against Muslims have declined since 9/11, while attacks on Jews in America and across Europe are increasing.

In short, I just don’t buy the narrative of victimhood being used to describe the life of American Muslims. In fact, our elites are so anxious to prove they aren’t anti-Muslim that people looked the other way rather than challenge the radical Islamist Major Nidal Hasan who walked into Fort Hood and killed 13 soldiers.

A Muslim is much more in danger in Pakistan, Iraq, Afghanistan, and elsewhere where mosques are being blown up by other Muslims. I assume that is why so many Muslims are still trying to immigrate here – to the “hate-filled” U.S.A.

Finally, a tip of the hat to the Christian leaders speaking out against the Koran burning. But we will know progress is being made when we see Muslim leaders in the U.S. and worldwide condemn with the same passion not the burning of the books but the burning, bombing and beheading of actual Christians, Jews and other “infidels.”

Until then I don’t need religious liberty lectures from CAIR, the Muslim Brotherhood, the ACLU, Mayor Bloomberg, Hillary Clinton, Attorney General Holder or Barack Obama – none of whom have shown much interest in religious liberty until now.

Obama Sends Mixed Messages

For weeks it seemed like common sense just might prevail in Washington. With the economy sputtering and unemployment rising, a few Democrats were bold enough to break ranks and suggest that maybe this isn’t the best time to raise taxes.

In a recent academic journal, Christina Romer, the former chairwoman of President Obama’s Council of Economic Advisers, wrote, “tax increases are highly contractionary . . . tax cuts have very large and persistent positive output effects.”

Peter Orzag, President Obama’s former budget director, wrote in a New York Times op-ed this week, “…no one wants to make an already stagnating jobs market worse over the next year or two, which is exactly what would happen if the cuts expire as planned.”

Even Barack Obama conceded during the 2008 campaign that he might have to delay his planned tax hikes if the economy were “weak.” Things haven’t gotten any better in the 19 months he’s been in office! When he said two years ago that he might have to delay his tax hikes, unemployment was 6.1%. It is 9.6% now.

But in Ohio today, President Obama reiterated his plans to raise taxes on individuals and small business owners who make $200,000 or more a year. At the same time, the president is proposing another multi-billion dollar stimulus spending plan. And White House sources tell CNBC that they can’t wait for this fight over economic policy. Allow me to explain the foolishness of this argument.

The Administration concedes that growth isn’t happening fast enough. So Obama’s solution is another multi-billion dollar stimulus program based on the Keynesian argument that when the economy is shrinking, the government should run deficits to stimulate growth. But while Obama is recommending this spending program, he is also arguing that it makes perfect sense to seize billions of dollars out of the economy with a huge tax hike on January 1st.

In what world does this makes sense? It only makes sense if your first goal is not economic growth but the redistribution of wealth.

Obama is proposing more Big Government spending – creating jobs for more bureaucrats, giving more power to Washington and sending more of your money to the labor unions. At the same time, he is offering tax hikes that take money away from entrepreneurs, small businesses and investors – the folks who create jobs and economic growth. But in the ideological fervor of this White House, they are the “bad guys” and must be punished with higher taxes.

Abbas Answers

At last week’s Middle East peace talks in Washington, D.C., Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu again urged Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas to recognize Israel’s right to exist as a Jewish state. Abbas answered Netanyahu in an interview with Al-Quds newspaper, saying, “We’re not talking about a Jewish state and we won’t talk about one. …we won’t recognize Israel as a Jewish state. …you can’t expect us to accept this.”

That would seem to be the starting point of any negotiations. If the Palestinian leadership won’t even recognize Israel’s right to exist, exactly what is there to negotiate?

Abbas offered some more thoughts on that point in an interview with the Al-Ayyam newspaper, saying he would not make any concessions to Israel. Abbas said, “If they demand concessions on the right of the refugees or the 1967 borders, I will quit. I can’t allow myself to make even one concession.”

Once again, Israel is facing negotiations with a Palestinian leader who is only prepared to discuss Israeli concessions.

“A Generational-Long Struggle”

Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair recently released his memoirs. While so many elites get tongue-tied by political correctness, Blair correctly identifies the religious component to radical Islam.

Referring to today’s jihadists, Blair wrote in his memoirs, “…it can’t be denied that its practitioners act with reference to their religion. I feel we too often shy away from this assertion, as if it stigmatizes all Muslims. But if it is true — and it is — it has to be faced … because otherwise we don’t analyze the problem or attain the solution properly.”

He notes how too many Muslim leaders are afraid to confront Islamic extremists “for fear of losing support,” and he points to the Palestinians as a prime example. Of peace in the Middle East, Blair writes, “…if the Palestinian cause gave up violence emphatically and without ambiguity, there would be a peace agreement within the year. Not enough voices in the Muslim world are asking them to.”

While Tony Blair may no longer be in office, he is continuing to sound the alarm. Just a few days ago, Blair told the BBC that radical Islam is the world’s greatest threat. Last weekend, he spoke to ABC News and said that the struggle against Islamofascism is “a generational-long struggle,” similar to the Cold War against Soviet communism. He is right. As we approach the ninth anniversary of 9/11, when radical Islamists killed 3,000 Americans, Blair reminds us “If these people could have killed 30,000 or 300,000, they would have.”

Campaign Season Officially Underway

If you think today is just the day after Labor Day, you’re wrong. This also marks the first day of the campaign season – the day when most Americans historically begin tuning into elections. First, the good news. The polling is tremendously encouraging for Republicans, as this Politico column notes. But the bad news is that Democrats won’t be caught off guard like they were in 1994.

It is difficult to overstate the resource advantage Democrats have. While conservatives were demoralized after 2006 and 2008, the Left experienced a fundraising bonanza. As a result, Democrat incumbents in many of the most critical races have huge bank accounts. They will use this cash to dominate the airwaves, “carpet bombing” their conservative challengers with negative ads from now until November 2nd.

Moreover, it was recently reported that two labor unions – the AFL-CIO and the SIEU – will spend “a combined $88 million or more” in the elections. That’s just two organizations among the myriad of left-wing groups! The Left’s strategy is clear.

Liberals can’t campaign on their own record. From the stimulus to healthcare “reform,” they have failed miserably. In fact, one analysis of campaign ads found “it appears that no Democratic incumbent — in the House or in the Senate — has run a pro-[ObamaCare] TV ad since April, when Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) ran one.”

Democrats are going to do to every conservative candidate what they have done to Sarah Palin – they want voters to forget about all the failures of the liberal agenda, and they will try to convince you that conservatives are stupid, extremists, wacky, racist, etc. Don’t fall for it. Our country can’t afford two more years of the Obama/Pelosi/Reid regime.

ACTION ITEM: In the days ahead, we will be asking for additional financial support. But here’s something that won’t cost you a dime. Talk to your friends and family members, especially younger voters.

The evidence is overwhelming that many young people who voted for Obama are rethinking that choice, as the New York Times reports. If you’ve got a young person in your family who can’t get a job, who thinks unborn babies deserve to be protected by the law, who wants to see America free, strong and prosperous, approach him or her about those issues.

Talk about how high taxes and government regulation kill jobs. (Even Obama’s former budget director now says all the Bush tax cuts should be extended.) Explain how Obama’s record deficit spending threatens their future standard of living. Remind them that America is a force for good in the world and that our values are worth defending.

This is important, friends. The Democrat National Committee is spending $50 million to re-connect with first-time votes who backed Obama in 2008. In many cases, they are college graduates now entering the work force and facing a future that is less hopeful than the one they were promised two years ago. We can win their votes in 56 days.
