“Osama bin Laden: Made In The USA”

Rep. Peter King (NY), ranking Republican on the House Homeland Security Committee, is stepping up his demands for an investigation of the planned Ground Zero mega-mosque. Rep. King wants to know where the money is coming from. While speaking at the Heritage Foundation this week, King said, “It is going to cost over $100 million, I believe. The people who are involved in the construction of the mosque are refusing to say where their funding is going to come from.”

While the imam directing the mega-mosque project has been portrayed in the media as a paragon of tolerance and bridge building, I noted last week that Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf has been connected to extremist Wahhabi teachings. Now a CBS interview with Imam Rauf, taped just two weeks after the 9/11 attacks, has resurfaced. Consider this excerpt:

Bradley: Are you in any way suggesting that we in the United States deserved what happened?

Faisal: I wouldn’t say that the United States deserved what happened, but United States’ policies were an accessory to the crime that happened.

Bradley: You say that we’re an accessory? How?

Faisal: Because we have been accessory to a lot of innocent lives dying in the world. In fact, in the most direct sense, Osama bin Laden is made in the U.S.A.”
So that’s why we need a 13-story mega-mosque at Ground Zero – to make sure we understand that 9/11 was our fault; that Osama bin Laden was “made in the U.S.A.”

We have no intention of letting this issue fade away. While I don’t expect this Democrat Congress to heed Rep. King’s call for an investigation, I hope that the next Congress will be under new management and will take this issue far more seriously.

Where’s The Recovery?

The Obama/Biden “Summer of Recovery” tour bus hit a road bump today. According to a Commerce Department report released this morning, the economy grew at a sluggish 2.4% pace in the second quarter. While any growth is better than no growth, it’s not enough to create jobs and bring down unemployment. But the road to recovery could get a lot rockier in the months ahead.

In Wednesday’s message, I warned that more congressional Democrats seem willing to let the Bush tax cuts expire. Fox News has obtained a report from Congress’ Joint Committee on Taxation outlining what that will mean for many families if the Democrats get their way. Consider this excerpt:

“The study found that raising just the lowest income tax rate from 10 percent to 15 percent would cost 88 million taxpayers an average of $503 next year. Lowering the child tax credit from $1,000 to $500 per child would cost 31 million families an average of $1,033 in 2011; the reinstatement of the so-called marriage penalty… would cost 35 million couples an average of $595 each.”
And that would be in addition to a new $1,800-a-year national energy tax that a majority of House Democrats voted for last year.

Share this message with friends and family members who don’t think elections matter or who say there is no difference between the two parties. We have 95 days left to convince them otherwise.

GOP Fighting Hard

Conservatives on Capitol Hill are fighting hard every day, and I want to share some examples that I hope will encourage you for the brutal election battles ahead.

* Last month, I wrote about the danger of the Democrats using a post-election lame duck session of Congress to ram through whatever radical ideas they could before the new Congress is sworn in. Rep. Tom Price (R-GA) has introduced a resolution that would essentially adjourn this Congress after the election -- preventing it from meeting unless there is a national emergency. The nine-page resolution reads like an indictment of Democrat malfeasance, and you can read it here.

* Last week a congressional report found that ObamaCare would in fact provide taxpayer funding of abortions. As a result, 13 senators – all Republicans – sent a letter demanding that the Department of Health and Human Services “act immediately” to prevent any abortion funding. In addition, Rep. Chris Smith (R-NJ) yesterday introduced legislation that would “establish a permanent government-wide prohibition on taxpayer funding for abortion.”

* The newest member of Congress, Rep. Tom Graves (R-GA), who won a special election with support from CWF, introduced his first bill this week – legislation to prevent implementation of ObamaCare by cutting off all funding for the massive trillion-dollar program.

* Last night, House Republicans derailed a $11 billion Democrat tax hike that came out of nowhere. H.R. 5893 was introduced Wednesday and brought to the floor for a vote yesterday afternoon. Rep. Dave Camp (R-MI) offered an amendment that would have repealed the outrageous 1099 reporting requirements in ObamaCare. Rather than risk allowing the GOP to score even a small repeal victory, Democrats cancelled the vote and pulled their tax hike legislation off the floor.

Have you heard about any of these things in the “mainstream” media?

Fear And Envy

When I say that there are brutal battles ahead, I mean brutal. Obama’s message of “hope and change,” which galvanized so many to his cause, has given way to “fear and envy.”

The Democrats have nothing positive to campaign on. This administration has produced one record deficit after another. Unemployment has gone up since Obama took office. The stimulus bill is a colossal failure. Far from uniting us, Obama has divided us, as some Democrats now admit.

But Democrat leaders are now embracing that division. At a press conference in Washington this week, Democrat National Committee Chairman Tim Kaine unveiled his “Republican Tea Party Contract on America.”

The point of the event was to divide conservatives by portraying the Tea Party as a fringe movement. Democrat members of the House took turns denouncing the “extreme racist views” of some in the Tea Party. And Democrats plan to paint candidates who support the Tea Party movement as extremists.

This is precisely what Harry Reid is trying to do to Sharron Angle in Nevada. The Democrat mantra this campaign season will be “You’ve got to reelect us because the Republicans are crazy.” But for all of Reid’s radical rhetoric, the latest polls suggest his race remains a dead heat.

In addition, the Democrats will resort to class warfare, telling folks, “If you’re poor, it’s because that guy is rich. And we’re going to take it from him.” That is what redistribution of wealth is all about – envy. That is what socialism is all about. But socialism has never made anybody wealthy – except for elite government leaders.

The Democrats know their majority is in danger. This week, they bought $50 million of TV time in 54 Democrat-held House districts across the country. They are on defense, getting desperate and resorting to dirty tricks. But we cannot underestimate what their multimillion dollar smear campaign can do to confuse the American public.

Obama And The Mosque

Have you noticed how President Obama seems to be everywhere, all the time, with an opinion on everything? Yet he has been strangely silent about the effort to build a 13-story mega-mosque at Ground Zero in New York, the site of the attack by Islamists on 9/11. Surely the issue is more than a local concern.

Ground Zero belongs to all Americans. It is hallowed ground. Three thousand of us were brutally murdered there by jihadists who killed us because we were “infidels.” Their fellow jihadists are even now plotting to deliver greater sorrows to us and all free men.

The group that is planning to build the mosque refuses to disclose where the estimated $100 million needed for construction is coming from. This has produced legitimate national security implications that are a federal responsibility.

The president was quite vocal when he did not want Jewish homes built in certain neighborhoods of Jerusalem. So why the silence about building on the sacred land of Ground Zero?

Call the White House at 202-456-1111 and urge the president to oppose building a mosque at Ground Zero.

Thoughts On Arizona Ruling

* Once again Big Media is doing a lousy job explaining the ruling. Though Arizona was prohibited from enforcing the most important parts of the law, other important aspects of the law take effect today. According to Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli, who was one of eight state attornies general to support the Arizona law in court, prohibitions against sanctuary cities in Arizona and tough penalties for those who hire illegal aliens will be enforced.

* The Left and its media have their own goal here – to demonize Arizona and demoralize anyone else from doing anything about illegal immigration. If conservative politicians in other states try to enact similar laws, the media and left-wing activists will point to this ruling and say, “Don’t bother wasting taxpayer resources on a lost cause. Oh, and by the way, you’re a racist.”

* The judge argued that immigration is a federal responsibility. Here’s an idea. If I were governor of Arizona or one of several other states struggling with illegal immigration, I would send a bill to Washington, D.C. It would demand repayment for 100% of the costs associated with educating illegal aliens, providing medical treatment for illegal aliens, criminal justice issues related to illegal aliens and unemployment benefits for workers who have lost jobs to illegal aliens. If the bill is not paid within 30 days, I would sue the Obama Administration in federal courts.

* Reports here in Washington say that insiders at the White House were gleeful over the ruling. “We’ve won another one,” was one unattributed quote. They may want to put the corks back in the champagne bottles. The “victory” they just won flies in the face of what 60% of the American people want.

It is a perfect example of what is feeding the sense among millions of Americans that they don’t count anymore – that left-wing elites are calling the shots: A liberal judge appointed by Bill Clinton hears a suit brought by a so-called “Justice Department” that won’t prosecute an open-and-shut case with videotaped evidence against the New Black Panthers. The judge buys the government’s argument that essentially says, “We don’t care.” “We don’t care about the burden put on Arizona’s taxpayers. We don’t care about unemployed Americans who can’t find work. We don’t care about the drugs coming over the border.” Is this really a “win” for the Obama Administration to be bragging about with an election just 96 days away?

* If every citizen who supports the Arizona law went to the polls and voted against every candidate and politician who is closest to Obama on this issue, then the Democrats would not lose just a few dozen seats, they would lose 200 seats! Federal law could then be changed to allow states more flexibility.

* There will be an appeal based on the blocked sections of the law. That case will go to the 9th Circuit of Appeals, which will probably rule in favor of the Obama Administration and the ACLU. Keep in mind that the 9th Circuit is the most left-wing court in the country – nearly half of its decisions are overturned. If the Arizona law goes to the Supreme Court, there is a decent chance our side will prevail.

Border Security Is National Security

The Obama Administration’s refusal to allow Arizona’s law to take effect could have tragic consequences. Last week the Government Accountability Office (GAO) issued a new report warning that a number of Mexican drug cartels “specialize in smuggling special-interest aliens into the United States.” What is a “special-interest alien”? Let me put it this way: A majority of the nations on the list of “special interest countries” are Muslim.

This is not news. In 2006, FBI Director Robert Mueller testified before Congress that government agencies had broken up a Hezbollah smuggling ring in Mexico. Four years later, we’re still arguing about what to do about it. Meanwhile, the drug cartels have evidently learned a few tricks from their terrorist partners – they are now using car bombs in tactics nearly identical to Hamas and Hezbollah.

Arizona is feeling the brunt of the drug wars. According to the GAO report, “Assaults, kidnappings and hostage situations attributed to this conflict are increasing, particularly in Tucson and Phoenix, Arizona.” Obama’s lawsuit against Arizona’s anti-illegal immigration law is like rubbing salt into an open wound.

Rangel Refuses To Resign

Rep. Charlie Rangel (D-NY) has been formally charged by the House Ethics Committee with 13 violations stemming from a two-year investigation into his finances. The 40-year incumbent and former chairman of the tax-writing House Ways and Means Committee is refusing to resign and could become the first member of Congress to face a public trial since 2002, when Ohio Democrat Jim Traficant was expelled.

When Democrats took over the Congress in 2006, Nancy Pelosi promised the American people that she would run “the most honest, the most open and the most ethical Congress in history.” Instead, we’ve gotten thousand-plus page bills written behind closed doors, stuffed full of socialism and rammed through in the middle of the night.

Under Pelosi and the Democrats, Congress’ approval rating has collapsed to its lowest level ever. The American people deserve better. In 96 days we can start over with new leadership and a conservative Congress that will bring real change to Washington.

There is mass confusion in the media regarding a federal court ruling on Arizona’s anti-illegal immigration law set to take effect at midnight tonight. Most media outlets are reporting that the judge struck down the law that allows police to inquire about a suspect’s immigration status once they have been detained for another offense.

Some are reporting that the judge merely issued a temporary injunction against enforcement of the law until a full trial resolves the constitutional issues at stake. We will ascertain the facts and report back to you tomorrow.

Good News In The Gulf?

ABC News and the New York Times have reported in recent days that the oil in the Gulf of Mexico from the Deepwater Horizon leak is rapidly disappearing. Consider this from the ABC report: “The numbers don’t lie: two weeks ago, skimmers picked up about 25,000 barrels of oily water. Last Thursday, they gathered just 200 barrels.” So where did all that oil go?

Jeffrey Short, a former government scientist who studied oil spills, told the New York Times that “as much as 40 percent of the oil in the gulf might have simply evaporated once it reached the surface.” Forty percent is a pretty big number. Moreover, as the Times notes, “An unknown percentage of the oil would have been eaten by bacteria, essentially rendering the compounds harmless and incorporating them into the food chain.”

Now don’t get me wrong – I am not downplaying the seriousness of the disaster. Everyone wants clean oceans, clean beaches and oil-free seafood. Nor am I suggesting that BP should be exonerated. It should pay for the damage done to the hardworking families of the Gulf region. The spill effectively shut down the summer tourist season in Florida and has cost many in the Gulf fishing industry dearly. It has also provided an excuse for the Obama Administration to attack oil drilling.

But from day one of the leak, the “mainstream” media grossly failed to provide any semblance of perspective or balance in covering this story. Big name journalists hyperventilated on screen about the Gulf of Mexico becoming another Dead Sea. They parroted talking points from left-wing environmental groups. The media hyped the story, scared tourists away from beach communities and fueled an atmosphere of overreaction in Washington.

There is no doubt a lot of work left to do in the Gulf – especially in the Louisiana marshes affected by the leak. But we should not allow misguided policies like the drilling ban to compound the misery.

S.O.S – Stop Obama’s Spending!

That is the urgent message from the Congressional Budget Office’s (CBO) latest economic forecast, released yesterday. It comes on the heels of the Obama Administration’s updated estimate of the current fiscal year’s budget deficit – $1.47 trillion, another record. According to the Associated Press, “The government is borrowing 41 cents of every dollar it spends.”

Faced with such stark numbers, the CBO warned yesterday that deficits of this magnitude will cause our debt to become “unsupportable.” In short, America is at risk of becoming like Greece. Far from the “Summer of Recovery” that the administration is portraying, we are in fact on the fast track to bankruptcy.

So how is the majority party in Congress responding to this crisis? The Washington, D.C. newspaper The Hill reports today that House Democrats are again entertaining the idea of raising taxes on the middle class, which would break President Obama’s oft-repeated promise not to raise taxes on those making less than $250,000 a year.

Democrats don’t have to do anything to accomplish their goal – the Bush tax cuts are set to expire at the end of the year. If Congress does nothing, tax rates go up – and not just on the “rich.” What Democrats frequently ignore during their media appearances is that George W. Bush and the Republican Congress cut taxes across the board. Bush even cut the bottom tax rate by 50%!

It’s not just the “rich” who pay the higher tax rates. Most small business owners file their taxes as individuals, so higher taxes on the “rich” means higher taxes on small businesses. If small business owners are paying more in taxes, they will have less money to hire new employees.

We must address the deficit, but raising taxes is not the answer. By definition, a deficit means you are spending more money than you make, living a lifestyle you can’t afford. We can’t afford the government we have today, so the first solution ought to be to cut spending. You don’t need an advanced degree in economics from an Ivy League institution to comprehend that. Every family that balances its budget at the kitchen table gets it. Even the bean counters at the CBO get it.

While warning of the danger of unsustainable deficits, the CBO report also states, “To the extent that additional tax revenues were generated by increasing marginal tax rates, those rates would discourage work and saving, further reducing output and incomes.” In other words, tax hikes will hurt the economy. The problem isn’t a lack of revenue. The problem is Obama’s spending.

“Our Divisive President”

An op-ed in today’s Wall Street Journal caught my attention. The authors rip into Barack Obama for dividing Americans by class, race and party, and cite several examples, including the Cambridge cops incident, the president’s cynical exploitation of the immigration issue, the lawsuit against Arizona and the refusal to prosecute the New Black Panthers for voter intimidation. Here is the thrust their column:

“Rather than being a unifier, Mr. Obama has divided America on the basis of race, class and partisanship. Moreover, his cynical approach to governance has encouraged his allies to pursue a similar strategy of racially divisive politics on his behalf. …By dividing America, Mr. Obama has brought our government to the brink of a crisis of legitimacy, compromising our ability to address our most important policy issues.”
What makes the column significant is that it was written by Pat Caddell and Doug Schoen, Democrat Party activists and insiders who worked for Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton. Their critique further undermines the absurd charges of racism that are routinely lobbed against the Tea Party movement by liberal media and political elites. If Democrats like Caddell and Schoen see what we see and are speaking out against it, then the backlash against Obama could be bigger than the polls are measuring right now.

“Fiesta de Té”

The liberal elites have been trying to paint the Tea Party movement as racist. But events in a small California city suggest otherwise.

There is a taxpayer/citizen uprising taking place in Bell, California, against corrupt government officials. It has already claimed the scalps of several top city leaders. The liberal media is trying hard to ignore it, but the story is beginning to break out. It’s a story of Big Government excess and greed against a low-income minority community.

Bell is a small city of about 40,000 residents, 10 miles south of Los Angeles. According to various reports, about half its residents are foreign born (mostly Mexican), its per-capita income is just under $25,000 and more than 25% of its residents live below the poverty level.

Somehow this small, impoverished community was paying its city manager more than $787,000 a year. The police chief made more than $450,000 a year, and the assistant city manager was making more than $375,000 a year. The three individuals were the highest paid city officials in the country. Part-time city council members in Bell were making nearly $100,000 a year.

Granted, what was happening in Bell, just one small town in California, is an extreme example. But throughout the country, liberal politicians and public employee unions have been extraordinarily generous with the people’s money. So much so that many towns now can’t afford the bureaucracies that have been built, and entire states like California, Illinois and New York are facing bankruptcy.

Public records indicate that 62% of Bell’s registered voters are Democrats, 18% are independents and just 13% are Republicans. As the Orange County Register notes, “Democratic Party members represent Bell voters in every level of government.” From the halls of Congress, to the state legislature in Sacramento, to all five members of the city council – every elected politician in the area is a Democrat.

But proving that opposition to out-of-control Big Government is not a fringe or racist movement, Bell’s outraged residents took action. They stormed city hall with homemade signs and demands for less spending and smaller government. Given the community’s demographics, many referred to it as a “Spanish Tea Party.”

They formed a group called the “Bell Association to stop the Abuse,” BASTA, which is Spanish for “enough.” The protestors forced the resignation of the city manager, assistant manager and police chief. Yesterday, city council members agreed to slash their salaries by 90%. The mayor and vice mayor announced that they will finish their terms without pay.

The NAACP, MSNBC, other left-wing networks and liberal politicians might want to rethink their ludicrous claim that opposition to Big Government amounts to racism. And minority voters ought to rethink their allegiance to the party of Big Government.

Speaking Of Big Government…

The New York Times reported last weekend that the new British coalition government, facing a crippling national debt, has proposed “the most radical reorganization” ever of the nation’s socialized healthcare system. What is so “radical” about the plan?

According to the Times, it seeks to “decentralize” British healthcare, giving more power to local doctors and patients, as well as “shrink the bureaucratic apparatus.” The report adds, “Tens of thousands of jobs would be lost because layers of bureaucracy would be abolished.” After decades of experimenting with socialized medicine, the British are taking steps toward a more market-oriented approach and shedding “layers of bureaucracy” in the process.

Meanwhile, America is going in the opposite direction with ObamaCare’s trillion-dollar price tag, higher taxes, new commissions, czars and regulations. Worse, President Obama has appointed Dr. Donald Berwick to make it all “work.” A New York Times article yesterday quoted Berwick in 2008 as saying, “I am romantic about the [British] National Health Service; I love it.”

Evidently, many of the Brits who have to live with it aren’t quite so fond of it. A new Rasmussen poll finds that likely voters in America aren’t too keen on the idea either – 58% favor repealing ObamaCare before it goes into full effect.

Will Reid’s Energy Bill Benefit BP?

The Washington Times reports today that the Senate may begin debate this week on an energy bill that has been largely crafted by Democrat Leader Harry Reid. A key element of the bill involves increasing the liability of energy companies engaged in offshore drilling. But as the Times notes, the legislation “poses no great threat to giants like BP.”

In fact, industry experts are warning that if this bill passes, then only big companies like BP will be able to afford the increased risk of offshore drilling. While ostensibly written to punish BP, Reid’s bill would benefit BP.

A majority of U.S. oil companies are small, independent firms that cannot afford to take massive liability risks. Many would be forced out of the offshore drilling business, giving giant firms like BP a monopoly. But it could do even more damage.

Some industry experts fear that the Reid bill could cost even more jobs by discouraging all companies – even big ones – from drilling in the Gulf of Mexico. One analyst warned, “This would effectively eliminate deepwater drilling in the Gulf and send oil companies to other countries to do the drilling. …the U.S. runs the risk of losing a large source of energy that is not coming from a foreign source.”

Just one more example of “Big Government knows best.”

Thank You!

Thank you to everyone who responded to our urgent and unusual Sunday appeal for support. Your generosity is very encouraging to me and my team here at CWF!

In case you missed yesterday’s message, we’re fewer than 100 days away from the November congressional elections. While the polls are moving in our direction, recent fundraising reports are leading many to question the strength of the conservative movement. Just consider this excerpt from a story in today’s Washington Times:

“In some key races that may decide control of Capitol Hill this fall, it's coming down to a battle of Democratic money versus Republican momentum. …Still, in state after state, the 2010 midterm elections present an almost clinical test of the power of money to affect the results at the ballot boxes. With history, punditry and a rising number of polls pointing to major Republican gains, money may prove the last line of defense for Democrats.”
If you have not yet responded to yesterday’s urgent appeal, go online right now to to make a special gift through our secured website.

Yesterday we asked for $100 -- one dollar for each day until the elections. If you can’t afford to give $100, please give what you can. No gift is too small, and every dollar quickly adds up!

My friends, I am convinced that if we can close this financial gap, conservatives can score major victories this November. If we can overcome the Democrats’ “last line of defense,” we can take back Capitol Hill. I would hate to think that Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid might cling to power because of a handful of races.

Help us make the most of every opportunity. Please go to to help us stop Obama’s socialism!

Obama, Lockerbie & BP

America’s relationship with Great Britain, one our strongest allies, has soured in recent years. The special relationship got off on the wrong foot when Obama returned a bust of Winston Churchill that had been given to George W. Bush by former British Prime Minister Tony Blair after 9/11. It got worse with a buffoonish exchange of gifts between Obama and former Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

It didn’t help at all when the Scots decided last year to release Abdel Baset al-Megrahi, a Libyan intelligence officer convicted of the 1988 bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland. Two hundred seventy people were killed, including nearly 50 American college students who were returning from overseas studies. Megrahi was sentenced to life in prison, but was granted a “compassionate release” last August on the grounds that he was suffering from terminal cancer and had only days to live.

In recent weeks, there have been revelations that BP lobbied the British government for Megrahi’s release in return for a lucrative Libyan oil contract. The Senate Foreign Relations Committee is scheduled to hold a hearing on BP’s role this week.

It was against this backdrop that David Cameron, the new British prime minister, visited Washington last week in an attempt to reset Anglo-American relations. At the White House, the prime minister and the president both condemned Megrahi’s release, with Obama saying:

“I think all of us here in the United States were surprised, disappointed, and angry about the release of the Lockerbie bomber. And my administration expressed very clearly our objections prior to the decision being made and subsequent to the decision being made. So we welcome any additional information that will give us insights and a better understanding of why the decision was made.”
This weekend a shocking report broke overseas that casts doubt on just how “surprised” President Obama really was about Megrahi’s release. England’s The Sunday Times reported yesterday that “the U.S. government secretly advised Scottish ministers that it would be ‘far preferable’ to free the Lockerbie bomber than jail him in Libya.”

Richard LeBaron, a top U.S. embassy official in London, sent a secret memo to British and Scottish officials advising them of the U.S. position. As the The Sunday Times noted, Scottish officials believed LeBaron’s memo demonstrated the Obama Administration’s “half-hearted” opposition to Megrahi’s release.

In the wake of the controversy that erupted, Scottish officials are demanding that even more details of U.S. involvement, including a phone conversation between Attorney General Eric Holder and British ministers, be made public. It is hard to imagine that one of our closest allies would release a convicted terrorist who murdered scores of Americans, over our objections. But it now appears as though Megrahi was released with a “wink and a nod” from the Obama White House.

What could possibly be the administration’s motives for doing so? Was this one of the White House’s misguided attempts to “reach out” to the Muslim world? From attempts to shut down GITMO to efforts to appease Iran’s Islamofascist regime, it sadly fits a pattern of weakness we have seen from day one.

It’s hard to say if this story will have legs. The left-wing “mainstream” media certainly has no interest in pursuing it. But one well-connected Washington insider thinks it could be explosive. Click here to listen to an interview with former U.S. Attorney Joe DiGenova.

A Chilling Warning To Churches

After reporting on the Ground Zero mega-mosque last week, I received a disturbing e-mail from a supporter in Michigan. Evidently, the FBI sent a warning letter to Oakland County churches last week warning them of “suspicious activity.” For those not familiar with Michigan’s geography, Oakland County is just north of Dearborn, often described as America’s most Muslim city. Here is an excerpt of the letter:

“Dear Worship Coordinator:

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Oakland County Resident Agency, would like to bring to your attention suspicious activity occurring on several occasions over the last several months at Oakland County places of worship. Visitors to these places of worship have shown particular interest in the layout of the building; have questioned personnel as to where people congregate; when the worship center would be populated; and where Christians could be found in the building.”
That is a chilling warning from the FBI that suggests churches in Oakland County are possibly being cased. A FBI spokesman said there was no indication of a threat, but added, “We’re simply passing along information we received to area churches indicating that suspicious activity is going on, in an abundance of caution.”

The New Abortion Pushers

Statistically, it’s been a rough few years for the abortion-rights crowd. The numbers of abortions, abortion providers and abortion facilities have declined, and numerous polls have discovered a majority pro-life America for the first time in decades. But this is no time for pro-lifers to relax. Abortion remains the most common surgical procedure for American women. And many of the pro-life political gains of the last decade are being rolled back by the most pro-abortion president and Congress in history.

As I explained over the weekend in my Human Events column, the most important effect of the abortion-movement’s strategy to impose abortion will be to force pro-life doctors and hospitals to choose between participating in the moral evil of abortion and abandoning the field. There are 100 days until the 2010 mid-term elections. On the Lord’s Day I want to ask you to do two things. First, please pray for our country as Dr. Charles Stanley urged his congregation to do in his powerful July 4th “Turning the Tide” sermon.

Second, I urgently need your immediate financial support. Please go online right now to to make a special one-time gift of $100 through our secured website.

That’s just one dollar for each day until the elections. A dollar a day to send Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi to the unemployment line. A dollar a day to stop Obama’s socialism!

My friends, I know it is Sunday, but this request is urgent. Please go to to make a special gift right now.

In Wednesday’s report, I gave you some positive news about the polling data on the November elections. Republicans have the lead in the polls. But since Wednesday, I have read some very disturbing news – the Democrats are continuing to outraise us.

There are roughly 70 competitive House races this year. But in many critical contests, our candidates are trailing in fundraising.

Right now, I’m concerned about several things:

Will we have the resources to respond to the Democrats’ negative ads and dirty tricks?

Will we have the resources to take advantage of every opportunity?

Will we have the resources to turn out our voters?
But what I don’t understand is how the Democrats are continuing to outraise us when the polls are so against them. Are conservatives taking this election for granted? Is the Left more committed than we are? We’ll find out in 100 days.

Let me know you’re still in this battle. Please support Campaign for Working Families with a special $100 gift today.

Help us “Stop Obama’s Socialism” by making sure CWF has the resources we need to defeat the liberal Democrats and elect more pro-family, pro-life conservatives to Congress.

Thank you and God bless you!

Domestic Terrorism On The Rise

Zachary Chesser, 20, of Fairfax, Virginia, was arrested this week and charged with domestic terrorism. Was Zachary a member of the NRA? Was he a pro-life demonstrator? An anti-illegal immigration activist? Or, worse, a Tea Party member? No, he was none of those things. Like so many before him, Chesser is a convert to the “religion of peace.”

Despite living in one of the wealthiest communities in America, just outside of Washington, D.C., Zachary Chesser was charged in federal court this week with trying to join the jihadist group Al-Shahab, based in Somalia. Earlier this month, Al-Shahab claimed responsibility for the bombing in Uganda that killed 75 people for the “sin” of watching the World Cup soccer games.

ABC News reported yesterday that in the past 18 months, 34 Americans have been charged for having ties to international jihadist groups. Richard Clarke, a former White House counterterrorism adviser, told ABC, “This is what we have feared for a very long time – that finally the ideology of radical Islam is effectively reaching into the United States… In the last six to nine months, the FBI has seen more domestic Islamist extremist activity than at any time since immediately right after 9/11.” So much for President Obama’s outreach to the Muslim world.

While the Left hyperventilates over the alleged racism and potential threats posed by the Tea Party, it is ignoring a far more serious and growing threat – radical Islam in America.

And while we’re on that subject, Andrew Bostom has a disturbing column in today’s New York Post linking the imam of the proposed Ground Zero mega-mosque to extremist Wahhabi teachings. As Bostom notes, “This fact alone should compel Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly and Mayor Bloomberg to withdraw their support for the proposed mosque.”

A number of folks have emailed in recent weeks asking what they can do in their communities about the growing threat of radical Islam. Here’s one idea – find out what is in your children’s textbooks and take action. Chances are the books are biased against Christianity and Judaism and present a highly sanitized version of Islam.

I wrote about this issue last year, and today I learned that the Texas Board of Education may consider a resolution at a September meeting to address many of the concerns I raised. God bless Texas!

Arizona Trial Begins

The Obama Administration pressed its case against Arizona yesterday in a Phoenix federal courtroom. While I hesitate to read too much into the judge’s questioning, at a minimum she seemed skeptical of the Obama Administration’s arguments and appeared to appreciate the tremendous difficulties Arizonans are confronting every day due to our porous borders.

According to one press report, Judge Susan Bolton “repeatedly questioned Justice Department attorney Edwin Kneedler to explain how specific provisions of the law intruded on federal authority.” Bolton even asked, “Why can’t Arizona be as inhospitable as they wish to people who have entered the United States illegally?” She also noted, “You can barely go a day without a location being found in Phoenix where there are numerous people being harbored.”

Meanwhile, in Washington this week, Senator Jim DeMint (R-SC) put the Senate on the record regarding Arizona’s anti-illegal law. DeMint offered an amendment to cut off funds for the Obama Administration’s lawsuit against Arizona, but Senate Democrats voted it down 43-to-55. Ninety-three percent of Senate Republicans supported the DeMint amendment, while 88% of Senate Democrats opposed it. Click here to find out how your senators voted.

Major Opposition To Ground Zero Mega-Mosque

Later today, pollster Scott Rasmussen will release the results of a new survey regarding the planned 13-story mosque near Ground Zero. According to Rasmussen’s release, by a 34-point margin Americans oppose the construction of a mega-mosque just yards from where Islam-inspired terrorists killed three thousand Americans. Just 20% support the mosque, which will be called the Cordoba House. That 20% mostly represents the far-left fringe of America for whom “tolerance” trumps common sense.

The mosque debate appears to be getting more attention. Sarah Palin weighed in recently, calling the project “a stab in the heart of the families of the innocent victims of those horrific attacks.” New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg fired back, saying, “Sarah Palin has a right to her opinions, but I could not disagree more. Everything the United States stands for and New York stands for is tolerance and openness, and I think it’s a great message for the world…”

At the Christians United for Israel Conference in Washington this week, I moderated a panel discussion during which I posed the question of whether Islamists are using our tolerance and our Constitution against us. Mort Zuckerman, chairman of U.S. News & World Report, was sympathetic to Mayor Bloomberg’s position, while Elliott Abrams, a senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations, and Malcolm Hoenlein, Executive Vice Chairman of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, sided with our view against the mosque.

Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich offered his thoughts yesterday in a brilliant column. Here are some excerpts I would like to share with you:

“Today, some of the Mosque’s backers insist this term is being used to ‘symbolize interfaith cooperation’ when, in fact, every Islamist in the world recognizes Cordoba as a symbol of Islamic conquest. It is a sign of their contempt for Americans and their confidence in our historic ignorance that they would deliberately insult us this way.

“Those Islamists and their apologists who argue for ‘religious toleration’ are arrogantly dishonest. They ignore the fact that more than 100 mosques already exist in New York City. Meanwhile, there are no churches or synagogues in all of Saudi Arabia. In fact no Christian or Jew can even enter Mecca. And they lecture us about tolerance. …

“We have not been able to rebuild the World Trade Center in nine years. Now we are being told a 13-story, $100 million mega-mosque will be built within a year overlooking the site of the most devastating surprise attack in American history. …

“America is experiencing an Islamist cultural-political offensive designed to undermine and destroy our civilization. Sadly, too many of our elites are the willing apologists for those who would destroy them if they could.”
What are you hearing about this issue in your community? I would appreciate your feedback.

The Shirley Sherrod Saga

I’m sure by now almost everyone reading this report knows the name Shirley Sherrod. Last week, she was an unknown bureaucrat with the Department of Agriculture, managing the Rural Development office in Georgia. Then a brief clip of Sherrod addressing an NAACP audience went viral Monday morning. By the afternoon, the Secretary of Agriculture had fired her for admitting to racial discrimination. The NAACP denounced her. The media were in a frenzy.

The knee-jerk reaction to the Sherrod video is absolutely surreal when compared to the controversy regarding the Justice Department’s dismissal of the New Black Panther Party case and the media’s total blackout of the story. But I digress.

Twenty-four hours later, the Sherrod story started to unravel. It was discovered that Sherrod’s comments about not helping a white man and sending him to a white lawyer, “one of his own,” were taken out of context. Her story really was a positive one, and many commentators across the political spectrum rushed to Sherrod’s defense. Wednesday, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsak and White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs made public apologies and a new job was extended to Sherrod. This afternoon, President Obama called Sherrod to “express his regret over the events of the last several days.”

It’s great that the media and the Left have finally found some use for context. But there is a political double standard. Remember how Trent Lott was drummed out of his leadership position for one remark? Remember when Rush Limbaugh tried to buy a NFL football team and the deal was cancelled after the media falsely attributed racist quotes to Limbaugh?

Yes, context is important. So here is more context regarding the Shirley Sherrod saga.

Sherrod says that for her it’s not about black and white, but all about envy and class warfare – about the rich versus the poor. In the same NAACP speech, Sherrod makes the bizarre claim that the rich invented racism and slavery to keep poor people down. She then makes this statement:

“The only difference is that the folks with money want to stay in power. And whether it’s healthcare or whatever it is, they’ll do what they need to do to keep that power. It’s always about money, y’all.

“I haven’t seen such mean-spirited people as I’ve seen lately over this issue of healthcare. Some of the racism we thought was buried, didn’t it surface! Now we endured eight years of the Bushes and we didn’t do the stuff these Republicans are doing because you have a black president.”
Sherrod’s speech is a perfect example of the corrupting influence of so-called “social justice” that demonizes wealth and promotes socialism under the guise of civil rights. Worse, her speech is another example of left-wing activists attributing political differences to racism. So, is anyone really surprised that the White House is offering her a new job?

“Unusual Uncertainty”

In testimony before Congress yesterday, Ben Bernanke, chairman of the Federal Reserve, described the state of the economy as “unusually uncertain.” For most small business owners and the unemployed, that is a gross understatement. What is contributing to this unusual uncertainty? I believe it is many of the policies coming out of the Obama Administration.

From ObamaCare to cap and trade, this administration is proposing one massive Big Government program after another. The stimulus program has not worked, yet the administration continues to pretend otherwise. Joe Biden is out promoting the “Summer of Recovery,” while the Fed chairman warns the economy is “unusually uncertain.” If Obama wanted to eliminate some of the uncertainty, he would listen to the advice of his own top economic advisers and immediately announce his support for extending the Bush tax cuts.

Writing in yesterday’s Wall Street Journal, Stanford economics Professor Michael Boskin notes, “In the most recent issue of the American Economic Review, Ms. Romer (and her husband David H. Romer) conclude that ‘tax increases are highly contractionary . . . tax cuts have very large and persistent positive output effects.’” For those who do not recognize the name, Boskin is referring to Christina Romer, chairwoman of President Obama’s Council of Economic Advisers.

But unless Congress acts, the Bush tax cuts will expire on December 31st. If nothing is done, all taxpayers will face major tax hikes that will pull trillions of dollars out of the economy. (You can read more on that impending disaster here.)

So far, fewer than a dozen members of the Democrat majority in Congress have come out in favor of extending all of the Bush tax cuts. Preserving these tax cuts will be a major issue in the fall campaigns. And 103 days from now, the voters should refuse to extend the careers of any politician who does not vote to keep these tax cuts.

Obama’s Commitment To Jobs I

Two studies were released this week on the economic impact of the Gulf oil spill. According to the research firm Moody’s, if the Deepwater Horizon leak remains contained, the Gulf states stand to lose $1.2 billion in economic output and as many as 17,000 jobs.

As bad as the oil spill has been for the fishing and tourism industries, Moody’s analysis concluded, “The potential for even greater economic damage to Louisiana’s economy stems from President Obama’s six-month moratorium on new offshore drilling.”

The second study, conducted by Dr. Joseph Mason of Louisiana State University, focused on the potential consequences of the Obama Administration’s drilling ban. According to Dr. Mason, if the drilling ban remains in effect, the Gulf states stand to lose $2.1 billion and 8,000 jobs. The “spill-over effects” could cost another 4,000 jobs nationally.

The oil spill is an economic and environmental disaster. But the administration’s actions – from its slow response to its ill-conceived drilling ban – have only compounded the tragedy by putting thousands of jobs at risk when the region can least afford it.

Obama’s Commitment To Jobs II

When Congress approved the creation of the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP), it also created the Office of the Special Inspector General (SIGTARP) to monitor how these funds were administered. A new audit from TARP’s Special Inspector General Neil Barofsky offers a scathing critique of the auto industry bailout and takeover. Barofsky even goes so far as to state that the Obama Administration’s actions led to unnecessary layoffs and contributed to higher unemployment. Consider this excerpt:

“At a time when the country was experiencing the worst economic downturn in generations and the government was asking its taxpayers to support a $787 billion stimulus package designed primarily to preserve jobs, Treasury made a series of decisions that may have substantially contributed to the accelerated shuttering of thousands of small businesses and thereby potentially adding tens of thousands of workers to the already lengthy unemployment rolls – all based on a theory and without sufficient consideration of the decisions’ broader economic impact.

“It is not at all clear that the greatly accelerated pace of the dealership closings during one of the most severe economic downturns in our Nation’s history was either necessary for the sake of the companies’ economic survival or prudent for the sake of the Nation’s economic recovery.”
You may recall that at the time there was some controversy over how GM and Chrysler decided which dealerships to shut down. It appeared as though political considerations, rather than purely financial issues, were involved in the decisions to terminate certain dealerships.

Inspector General Barofsky weighed in on “Dealergate” as well, writing, “Just as troubling, there was little or no documentation of the decision-making process to terminate or retain dealerships with similar profiles, making it impossible in many cases for SIGTARP to determine the causes of deviations from the supposedly objective criteria.”

As Michelle Malkin writes, Barofsky’s audit tells you “Everything you need to know about the nightmare of government-controlled businesses…” It’s a tale of “grisly incompetence, fatal bureaucratic hubris and Big Labor cronyism.” Just wait until this crowd starts running our health care too!

How Low Can He Go?

Quinnipiac University released a new poll today showing that Obama’s job approval rating has “dropped to a negative 44-to-48 percent, his worst net score ever.” One year ago, Obama’s rating was 57%-to-33%, “just before the political firestorm created by opposition to his health care plan galvanized political opponents and turned independent voters against him.” What about those independent voters? According to Quinnipiac’s findings, they now disapprove of Obama by a 14-point margin of 38%-to-52%.

On specific issues, Obama’s ratings are down across the board in this latest poll of nearly 2,200 registered voters. Here are some key findings:

* On foreign policy, 46% disapprove and 43% approve.

* On his handling of the Gulf oil spill, 51% disapprove and 41% approve.

* On the economy, 56% disapprove of Obama’s performance, while just 39% approve.

* And on his handling of illegal immigration, 58% disapprove, while only 30% approve.

On immigration, Quinnipiac delved further, asking voters about the direction immigration reform should take and their views on Arizona’s new anti-illegal immigration law. The results were remarkable.

Sixty-nine percent of voters want immigration reform to move in the direction of “stricter enforcement,” while just 22% want immigration reform to move in the direction of “integrating illegal immigrants into American society.” Those figures represent a seven-point swing toward stricter enforcement from Quinnipiac’s June poll.

On Arizona’s new law, 55% of voters support it, while 30% oppose it. By a 16-point margin, voters would support their state passing a similar law, and 60% of voters oppose the Obama Administration’s lawsuit against Arizona, while just 28% support it.

But wait…there’s more! For the first time, more Americans now think the country would be better off had John McCain won the 2008 election. And looking ahead to 2012, Quinnipiac notes that 48% of voters do not believe Obama deserves reelection, while just 40% do.

Obama won’t be on the ballot in 2010, but his socialist enablers in Congress will be. And there is good news on that front too. Quinnipiac found that registered voters now prefer Republican candidates by five points in the upcoming congressional elections.

Given the well-documented “enthusiasm gap” between liberal and conservative voters this year and the generally higher turnout among conservative voters in mid-term elections, many political analysts believe that a GOP lead in polls like this could translate into a Republican landslide on Election Day.

As optimistic as this sounds, I’m not taking anything for granted. The Democrats are desperate to maintain their stranglehold on power, and they have plans to spend more than $100 million to make sure their left-wing base turns out in November. We cannot afford to be lulled into a false sense of complacency. The stakes are simply too great.

Democrat Deception

In past reports, we have outlined a number of promises and pledges made about ObamaCare that have been broken. Here’s one more.

One of the most controversial aspects of the healthcare “reform” bill that President Obama and Democrats rammed through Congress is the individual mandate. Critics of the legislation question the mandate’s constitutionality. The government has never before dictated how individuals must spend their money or forced them to buy a product. Soon, if citizens don’t buy insurance, they will be subject to a fine, which many critics label a tax.

President Obama and congressional Democrats vehemently object to any suggestion that the mandate constitutes a tax. Let’s go back to last fall. ABC host George Stephanopoulos confronted the president on this issue and asked whether he was breaking his pledge not to raise taxes on those making less than $250,000 a year.

“No. That’s not true, George,” President Obama insisted, adding, “For us to say that you’ve got to take a responsibility to get health insurance is absolutely not a tax increase.” Stephanopoulos then cited Webster’s dictionary, which defines “tax” as “a charge, usually of money, imposed by authority on persons or property for public purposes.” Obama objected again, and told Stephanopoulos, “I absolutely reject that notion.” That was September 2009.

Barack Obama and congressional Democrats may not want to call it a tax in public, but it is a tax and they are admitting that in court. In legal briefs filed in response to challenges against ObamaCare, the administration is defending the individual mandate by referring to it as a tax. Here is an excerpt from a New York Times report this weekend:

“When Congress required most Americans to obtain health insurance or pay a penalty, Democrats denied that they were creating a new tax. But in court, the Obama administration and its allies now defend the requirement as an exercise of the government’s ‘power to lay and collect taxes.’ And that power, they say, is even more sweeping than the federal power to regulate interstate commerce. Administration officials say the tax argument is a linchpin of their legal case in defense of the health care overhaul and its individual mandate… ”
Professor Jack Balkin of Yale Law School supports ObamaCare and has filed a brief defending the constitutionality of the individual mandate. Addressing a group of liberal lawyers last month, Dr. Balkin put it bluntly, saying that Obama “has not been honest with the American people about the nature of this bill. This bill is a tax. Because it’s a tax, it’s completely constitutional.”

So what should we conclude? Did the president and congressional Democrats not know what was in the bill they were pushing? Did Obama know, as Professor Balkin suggests, but choose to deceive George Stephanopoulos and the American people in order to win by any means necessary?

It wouldn’t be the first time the administration has twisted the facts. It continues to promote the myth that its cap and trade agenda won’t harm the economy or family budgets. But even Democrats admit cap and trade is a “great big tax.” The Treasury Department knows it will cost families nearly $1,800 a year, and Harvard researchers say it could lead to $7.00-a-gallon gas.

Liberal Media Conspired To Save Obama

There is a shocking report today from the Daily Caller exposing a vast left-wing media conspiracy to save Barack Obama’s 2008 campaign by shutting down reporting on Jeremiah Wright.

This goes way beyond charges of media bias. This is much more than one reporter allowing his or her own opinions to slant coverage of an issue. This involves a cabal of journalists from multiple news organizations conspiring to control the news and plotting to impugn the reputations of other journalists all in an effort to aid a candidate for president of the United States. And it reflects a well-documented pattern.

After the Jeremiah Wright controversy emerged during a 2008 presidential debate, members of Journolist (an online community of liberal journalists, professors and activists) recognized the potential threat to Obama and began strategizing about how to respond. True to the Saul Alinsky playbook, their reaction was not to repudiate Jeremiah Wright, but to condemn those who dared to question Obama about his long-term relationship with Wright. Here was the plan, articulated by Spencer Ackerman of the Washington Independent:

“What is necessary is to raise the cost on the right of going after the left. …let the right know that it needs to live in a state of constant fear. … If the right forces us all to either defend Wright or tear him down, no matter what we choose, we lose the game they’ve put upon us. Instead, take one of them — Fred Barnes, Karl Rove, who cares — and call them racists.”
Change the subject by calling your opponents racists. If this sounds familiar, it should. It worked for the Left during the 2008 campaign, so it has continued doing it for the past 18 months. “Racism” became the Left’s retort to any policy disagreement. Whether it was town hall protestors worried about ObamaCare, Tea Party activists worried about out-of-control spending or Obama’s policy toward Israel, in the fevered brows of liberals, racism was always the culprit motivating every critic.

With a media establishment so willing to protect him – even willing to ignore the virulent anti-Americanism and racism of Jeremiah Wright – it’s no surprise that Obama feels free to distort the truth to advance his agenda.

Please, share this report with friends and family members who may be on the political fence. Many Americans, even some who are sympathetic to the liberal agenda, will be disgusted by these deceptive tactics. There are 105 days until the November elections. We cannot afford to take anything for granted. We must redouble our efforts in support of conservative candidates and causes. Working together, we can stop Obama’s socialism and make America a shining city upon a hill once again!

The Elite Disconnect

The disconnect between elites who live and work inside the Washington, D.C., beltway and the folks who work on Main Street, U.S.A., has been a topic of heated discussion for many years. I am often asked how people who get elected from Middle America come to Washington and change their values. Some call it “Potomac Fever.” Whatever you call it, it appears to be very real.

The popular insider media outlet Politico recently conducted two polls to measure the attitudes of most Americans compared to those of Washington’s beltway elites. It found that 49% of Washington elites felt the country was on the right track, and 44% of Washington elites felt the economy was on the right track. But folks outside of Washington felt very differently: 61% of the general population felt America was on the wrong track, and 65% felt the economy was on the wrong track. Here are some other interesting findings:

* 68% of Washington elites said the Tea Party was a fad that would fade over time, while only 26% of the general population agreed with that statement.

* 64% of Americans outside of Washington felt that government ethics is a very important issue, while 49% of D.C. elites felt the same – a difference of 15 points.

* There was a 16-point gap on taxes, with 53% of Main Street Americans believing that the issue of taxes is very important, compared to just 37% of D.C. elites.

* There was a 17-point gap on immigration – 53% of Main Street Americans felt immigration was a very important issue, while only 36% of Washington elites shared that view.

* The biggest gap came on the importance of family values. While 62% of Main Street Americans considered family values to be a very important issue, only 23% of D.C. elites felt the same way.

Politically, there is a yawning gap between Washington and the rest of the country. When asked about the 2010 congressional elections, Washington elites overwhelmingly favored Democrats – 53%-to-26%, while Americans outside of Washington were evenly divided. Looking ahead to 2012, D.C. elites supported Barack Obama 56%-to-28%, while the rest of America favored a Republican candidate by five points.

The problem with Washington is that politicians and policy makers live and work in such a cloistered environment that groupthink quickly sets in. Most watch the same TV shows, read the same newspapers and attend the same cocktail parties. When they hear the same opinions over and over again, they make the mistake of assuming that everyone shares that view.

Members of the House of Representatives were reportedly shell-shocked after they voted for cap and trade last year and then went back to their districts. While liberal, big government programs may be popular in Washington, they are not well thought of on Main Street. Healthcare “reform” may be popular in D.C., but polling consistently finds a strong majority of Americans don’t like ObamaCare and want to repeal it.

When Washington loses touch and the politicians forget who they are representing, big changes can happen at the ballot box, as happened in 1994 and 2006. If this poll is any indication of how out of touch Washington is with the American people, big changes may well be coming to Washington in 106 days.

“Summer Of Recovery”

With the economy and jobs dominating the list of voter concerns, the Obama White House kicked off its “Summer of Recovery” tour a month ago. The White House billed it as a “six-week focus on the surge” of stimulus-funded projects and the jobs they will create. And while Vice President Biden is out on the stump trying to sell the “Summer of Recovery,” as Politico’s poll noted, the American people aren’t buying it. That may be due in part to Biden’s own explanations.

In an interview that aired yesterday, Biden told ABC’s Jake Tapper that the stimulus isn’t working as well as they had hoped because it wasn’t big enough. That’s right – $862 billion wasn’t enough. Obama and Biden wanted to spend even more, but political realities on Capitol Hill – Republican opposition to the massive bill – prevented them from doing so.

Biden said, “In order to get what we got passed, we had to find Republican votes. And we found three – three. And we finally got it passed.” Had there been more appetite on Capitol Hill for spending even more of your money, Biden explained, “I think it would have been bigger.” Eighteen months and hundreds of billions of dollars later, unemployment is higher than before Obama’s surge of spending began. What evidence suggests more money is the solution?

Ignoring the results, Biden continued, “But the truth of the matter is that the recovery package, everybody’s talking about it [like] it’s over. The truth is now, we’re spending more now this summer [than last year]… I’m calling this the summer of recovery.” Evidently, President Obama missed the memo on how well the stimulus bill is working. Today he called for yet another extension of unemployment benefits, which the Senate is expected to pass tomorrow.

Acting Stupidly On Race

The election of our first black president was supposed to signal a milestone in our nation’s pursuit of a post-racial society. But instead of marking a new beginning in race relations, Obama’s presidency has given new life to the old politics of racial grievance. In fact, as I argued in my Human Events column yesterday, ironically, Obama himself has been most responsible for initiating a new era of race-baiting. You can read my column here.

The NAACP’s Shameful Resolution

At its annual conference this week, the NAACP adopted a resolution calling on Tea Party leaders to condemn the supposedly “racist elements” in the movement. Though the “civil rights” organization said that it does not have a problem with the Tea Party movement itself, and supports freedom of speech, NAACP president Benjamin Jealous said,”What we take issue with is the Tea Party's continued tolerance for bigotry and bigoted statements. The time has come for them to accept the responsibility that comes with influence and make clear there is no place for racism and anti-Semitism, homophobia and other forms of bigotry in their movement.”

To back up its claims of racism, the organization cites the supposedly racist signs at tea party rallies and the alleged hurling of racist epithets at black legislators at an event in Washington, D.C. There is absolutely no evidence that any epithets were uttered. Make no mistake: these allegations have nothing to do with race and everything to do with politics. There are a number of black conservatives running for office across the country this year. I guarantee you that none of them will receive the NAACP’s support. That’s because, as Rush Limbaugh and others have said, the group’s more accurate name is the NAALCP, the National Association for the Advancement of Liberal Colored People.

Obama Finally Takes Responsibility

President Obama made remarks today about the Gulf oil leak. Throughout the nearly three-month-long crisis, the Obama Administration has blamed everyone from BP to George W. Bush and the Republican Party. And Obama has said repeatedly that BP would be responsible for solving the crisis. “Let me be clear: BP is responsible for this leak. BP will be paying the bill,” he said in May.

Earlier this week, BP placed a new cap on the leak, and it appears to be working, at least for now. That’s great news. What’s curious, though, is that in his remarks today, the president suddenly seemed to take credit for the good news. He said:

“There’s no doubt that WE have made progress as a consequence of this new cap fitting on, and that even if it turns out that WE can’t maintain this cap and completely shut off the flow of oil, what the new cap allows US to do is to essentially attach many more containment mechanisms so that WE’RE able to take more oil up to the surface, put it on ships -- it won’t be spilling into the Gulf.”

He continued:

“…WE are making steady progress and I think the American people should take some heart in the fact that WE’RE making progress on this front. WE won’t be done until WE actually know that WE’VE killed the well and that WE have a permanent solution in place. WE’RE moving in that direction, but I don’t want US to get too far ahead of ourselves.”

But the Obama Administration has had little to do with capping the leak. It’s BP’s cap and it was installed by BP’s workers. The administration has been on the sidelines for most of the process. But if the cap proves to be the long-term solution to stopping the leak, I bet you we’ll be hearing a lot more “we’s” and “us’s” from Obama.

Get Out The Popcorn - Family Television Is Back!

Family-friendly television programming has been dying for years. Picking a show for the whole family to watch is nearly impossible because sex, drug use, violence and foul language are staples on most shows. In an effort to combat this alarming trend, Wal-Mart started its Family Moments campaign to provide family-friendly movies on primetime television. They have produced four high-quality entertainment movies, one of which aired in April and was the highest-rated program of the evening, beating network premieres of box office hits and popular network shows.

The second movie, The Jensen Project, is set to air on NBC this evening at 8pm EST. The film centers on a family that finds itself in a frantic pursuit to keep a potentially dangerous technology from falling into the wrong hands. As the family races against the clock, it discovers an important truth: In this high-pressure, high-tech world, sometimes the smartest thing we can do is lean on each other. We at American Values pre-viewed the movie and found it to be 100 percent family-friendly.

Rescuing The American-Israeli Alliance

The first 18 months of the Obama Administration have not been good for Israel. Iran is 18 months closer to having nuclear weapons, and Obama officials have tilted U.S. policy toward the Muslim world at the expense of the U.S.-Israeli alliance. Meanwhile, a new left-wing group called J-Street, allegedly funded by George Soros, claims to be pro-Israel, but takes the side of Israel’s worst critics in virtually every confrontation.

Fortunately, help is on the way! Pastor John Hagee’s Christians United for Israel (CUFI) will bring thousands of pro-Israel activists to Washington next week for our fifth annual convention. One day will be devoted to visiting members of Congress. As one of the original founders of CUFI, I am excited to see this group continue to grow in support and influence. Go to to find out how you can be involved.

But that is not all. This week I joined Bill Kristol, conservative writer and intellectual Rachel Abrams and others to launch the Emergency Committee for Israel. Our goal is to challenge those in and out of government whose policies undermine Israel and the U.S.-Israeli alliance. The Emergency Committee is running a television ad in Pennsylvania exposing the record of Congressman Joe Sestak, a candidate for the state’s open Senate seat.

Sestak has a long record of joining Israel’s critics and even cooperating with Islamic groups like CAIR. CAIR opposes virtually every attempt by the U.S. to win the war against Islamofascism.

Here’s the best development – all the right people are condemning our efforts! When the news broke this week about the Emergency Committee, a bevy of left-wing Israel-bashers and Islamist apologists reacted with shock and horror. Verbal bombs started raining down on the Committee and its founders. The blogosphere erupted with attacks, many of them personal, on Bill Kristol, Rachel Abrams and me. Little did our opponents know that their screams of outrage were confirmation to us that we are engaged in a noble and needed enterprise. You can find out more at

Obama’s Backward Logic

A CBS poll that had such bad news for President Obama on the economy also found that 57% of Americans support Arizona’s tough new law against illegal immigration, while 23% oppose it. Buried in the report on this poll was this interesting finding: 17% said the law does not go far enough. That means roughly three-quarters of the country supports a stronger stand against illegal immigration, and just 23% favor a lax approach.

With numbers like these, it’s no surprise that lawmakers in 18 states are considering similar legislation. It also makes it very difficult to comprehend why the administration is suing Arizona. The administration’s logic only adds to the confusion. An official for the Justice Department confirmed this week that sanctuary cities, so named because they explicitly violate federal immigration law, won’t be sued.

A spokeswoman for Attorney General Eric Holder told the Washington Times, “There is a big difference between a state or locality saying they are not going to use their resources to enforce a federal law, as so-called sanctuary cities have done, and a state passing its own immigration policy that actively interferes with federal law.”

This logic is backwards. It is the sanctuary cities that are interferring with federal law, while Arizona is trying to help the federal government enforce its own laws!

Thankfully, Senators Jim DeMint (R-SC) and David Vitter (R-LA) are proposing an amendment that would deny funding to the Justice Department for any federal lawsuit against the Arizona law. Their amendment may get a vote next week. It will be interesting to see how many senators side with the overwhelming majority of the American people and vote to end this nonsense.

The States vs. The Feds

Like the Arizona immigration law, the Gulf Coast oil spill is highlighting a major split in public opinion regarding the role of the federal government. A new Washington Post-ABC News poll finds that just 24% of Gulf Coast residents approved of President Obama’s handling of the spill, while 73% disapproved. Asked about the federal government’s response to the oil spill, 27% of Gulf Coast residents approved, while 72% disapproved. President Obama can at least be thankful that he’s not president of BP, which earned a dismal 17% approval rating.

In stark contrast to the negative assessment of the federal government’s actions, 62% of Gulf Coast residents approved of how local and state officials have reacted to the spill. Conservatives have long argued that the government closest to the people is most responsive to the people. This poll seems to confirm that belief.

Our Founding Fathers understood that principle and very clearly limited the role of the federal government. They wisely reserved all else to the states. Whether it’s running car companies or taking over healthcare for all Americans, today’s federal government is simply doing too much. That’s not just a talking point – it is a fact borne out by yet another trillion-dollar budget deficit.

The Barney Frank—Ron Paul Alliance

Yes, you read that headline right. Barney Frank and Ron Paul have teamed up to write an op-ed for the left-wing Huffington Post advocating taking an ax to the defense budget. Frank and Paul rail against American foreign policy, and advocate that we withdraw from Europe, Asia and the Middle East. But if we withdraw from Asia, China takes over; if we withdraw from Europe, we leave it to a resurgent Russia. Leave the Middle East and Iran will control the world’s energy resources. The Barney Frank/Ron Paul approach would be a disaster.

Ron Paul has made bizarre arguments before. During the 2008 presidential debates, he even suggested 9/11 was our fault, saying, “They attack us because we’ve been over there; we’ve been bombing Iraq for 10 years.” This is also the same mindset that leads some to suggest we should abandon Israel to the tender mercies of its Islamofascist neighbors. They do not see Israel as an ally that is literally on the frontline in the battle for Western Civilization, but rather as an albatross around America’s neck.

Paul and Frank closed their column by informing readers that they are seeking more support in both parties for their plans to slash defense spending. They have sent a letter to President Obama’s National Committee on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform, which will produce a report on reducing the deficit after the elections, demanding that “substantial reductions in military spending must be included in any future deficit reduction package.” And they promised to “oppose any proposal that fails to do so.”

Cutting spending is definitely the right idea. As every family knows, budgeting is about setting priorities. But national defense is the primary obligation of government. Our men and women in uniform deserve our full support, and maintaining our security ought be our first priority – not the first thing we cut.

Obama Sinking

Three polls in the last 24 hours indicate that American voters are worried, pessimistic and increasingly turned off by the Obama agenda. A CBS survey indicates that only 25 percent of the country believes the economy is improving. That is not surprising as economic data out today show sinking retail sales and plummeting home mortgage applications. A Washington Post/ABC poll shows 60 percent of the country now says they have no faith in the president. A Pew Research Center/National Review poll finds that the biggest Obama victory – socialized medicine – is supported by a measly 35 percent of the country.

Every president has periods of sinking public support, and many of them bounce back. But usually they recover after changing their policies. The Obama Administration shows no inclination to do that. Obama’s thrust is still bigger government, higher taxes and weakness abroad – all things that are rejected by the American people.

Bringing Science To The Abortion Debate

According to liberal myth, pro-lifers are are vulnerable to charges of being anti-woman and anti-science. Pro-lifers subordinate dispassionate scientific inquiry to irrational religious belief, many liberals believe, and their "fetus fetish" blinds them to the plight of women in crisis pregnancies. But, as American Values senior writer Daniel Allott and I discuss in an op-ed today in the Washington Times, two novel laws passed recently in Nebraska explode those myths. They highlight how pro-lifers have embraced women and seized the mantle of science by revealing exactly what it is those who abort are choosing. You can read our piece here.

The Astronaut Gets Thrown Under The Bus

As we reported recently, NASA Administrator Charles Bolden made headlines when he told Al Jazeera TV last month that President Obama wanted him to use his position to make Muslim nations feel good about their contributions to science. (Sadly, as a guest on the Bauer & Rose show noted, Islam’s most recent contribution to “science” appears to be really effective roadside bombs.) But the Al Jazeera appearance wasn’t the first time Bolden had made that claim.

And when the interview made headlines, the White House actually defended Bolden’s remarks, stating “The President has always said that he wants NASA to engage with the world’s best scientists and engineers as we work together to push the boundaries of exploration. Meeting that mandate requires NASA to partner with countries around the world like Russia and Japan, as well as collaboration with Israel and with many Muslim-majority countries.”

However, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs seemingly threw Bolden under the bus Monday, saying, “That was not his task and that’s not the task of NASA.” When asked by reporters if Bolden misspoke, Gibbs answered, “I think so.” Confused yet? Don’t worry, folks, this is perfectly clear.

When the head of NASA, a former astronaut and retired Marine Major General, said that President Obama told him to reach out to Muslims, he just “misspoke” – twice. And his trip to Cairo, Egypt, where he spoke to Al Jazeera and which just happened to coincide with the one-year anniversary of Barack Obama’s much-hyped speech at Cairo University? That was no doubt a personal vacation and not official business, because we all know what a booming space industry Egypt has.

Like so much from the Obama White House, this latest explanation doesn’t pass the straight face test. It is truly regrettable that a good man like Charles Bolden is getting caught up in this administration’s politically correct nonsense.

Dishonoring The Victims Of 9/11

If you are looking for an example of the surrender of America’s elites in the face of the relentless jihad being fought against the U.S., Israel and Western Civilization, you need look no further than New York City. Unbelievably, local officials recently gave initial approval to plans to build a gigantic mosque and Muslim “cultural center” only yards away from Ground Zero.

The mayor of New York, Michael Bloomberg, has argued that we must respect religious freedom. But freedom of religion does not confer the right to build a church or mosque anywhere you want. Other considerations and zoning requirements must be considered.

I guarantee you if a Jewish group had proposed building a synagogue or if a Christian group had proposed a mega-church or cathedral in the middle of one of the large Muslim neighborhoods in New York, local officials would have found a way to deny the permits. But when it comes to the demands of Islamists local officials, possibly concerned about their heads, have allowed this plan to go forward.

The project’s supporters claim that a mosque rising from the ashes of Ground Zero simply demonstrates America’s great tolerance. I believe they are naïve. The mosque will be known as the Cordoba House, and the historical significance of that name cannot be ignored. The Cordoba mosque in Spain was built in the 8th century on the foundation of the church of St. Vincent to signify Islam’s conquest of Spain.

Building mosques on the sacred ground of conquered lands is an Islamic tradition – consider the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem. A 15-story, $100 million mosque at Ground Zero would send an unmistakable message to the Muslim world that America is weak, decadent and will eventually be claimed for Allah.

Clueless Elites

Liberal elites may be clueless, but New York City residents get it. A recent Quinnipiac University poll found that New York City voters overwhelmingly oppose the mosque – 52%-to-31% – even while those same voters express generally positive opinions of Islam. Opposition cuts across demographic lines with blacks opposed by 11 points, Catholics opposed by 10 points, Jews opposed by 42 points and Hispanics opposed by 41 points.

Fortunately, some New York politicians are speaking out. Former Congressman Rick Lazio, the Republican candidate for governor, has also demanded that New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, the Democrat candidate for governor, investigate the funding for the mosque. (Is this another project of the Saudis?) Lazio will be testifying against the mosque at a public hearing today on historic landmarks.

Rep. Peter King (NY), the ranking Republican on the House Homeland Security Committee, is demanding an investigation of where the estimated $100 million needed for the Ground Zero mosque will come from. King told the Associated Press, “It’s a house of worship, but we are at war with al-Qaeda. I think the 9/11 families have a right to know where the funding comes from; I think there are significant questions.”

Our elected leaders ought to be asking many questions about this mosque and the nature of the enemy we are fighting. We got more proof of the barbarism of radical Islam this week when scores of soccer fans were blown up in Uganda. We should never forget what the Taliban did in Afghanistan – they turned soccer stadiums into execution arenas, blew up ancient religious artifacts, banned music and banned little girls from schools. Such an evil ideology will not hesitate to turn our own tolerance against us.

This issue is not going away, and we will not be silent. Click here to encourage your members of Congress to support Rep. King’s call for an investigation of the mosque’s funding.

New Moratorium Threatens Jobs

Ignoring back-to-back losses in the federal courts, the Obama Administration issued a new drilling ban on so-called “deep water” drilling in the Gulf of Mexico. Far from satisfying the concerns of those opposed to Obama’s initial ban, the new ban has already come under fire. Senator Mary Landrieu of Louisiana – a Democrat – blasted the administration’s latest action in her testimony yesterday before the commission investigating the disaster. Here is an excerpt of her remarks:

“I am particularly alarmed by the Department of the Interior’s continued insistence that allowing deepwater drilling to move forward ‘would pose a threat of serious, irreparable, or immediate harm or damage to the marine, coastal, and human environment.’ That claim contradicts testimony given by drilling experts and ignores the history of oil and gas operations in the Gulf.

“…we must put this accident into perspective. According to the U.S. Department of the Interior, more than 42,000 wells have been drilled in the Gulf from 1947 to 2009, producing 16.5 billion barrels of oil. It is important to note that in the last 10 years, non-hurricane related spills only totaled about 7,000 barrels. … the record is clear that the Deepwater Horizon accident is the exception rather than the rule.”

“...Gulf Coast businesses and investors still lack the certainty they need to move forward with future plans. Whether you call it a moratorium, a suspension, or a pause, the result will still be a substantial loss of jobs. Even the revised moratorium will force thousands of hard-working Louisianians and others along the Gulf Coast into the unemployment lines.”
Sen. Landrieu is right. Some energy industry executives have expressed fears that the new ban may be even more restrictive. As the Wall Street Journal reports today, “a group representing shallow-water drillers said Monday uncertainty about Interior Department drilling policy has frozen activity in their industry, affecting hundreds of rigs.” One company executive said a third of their “shallow-water fleet has been idled.”

Because the administration is refusing to lift the ban, one drilling company has already begun plans to relocate three deepwater rigs – to Egypt, Brazil and the West African coast. The company’s president testified, “My concern is that if we shut down for six months there won’t be much of a U.S. industry left.” That may be music to the ears of radical environmentalists, but it will only compound the tragedy of the spill for many Gulf Coast families and increase America’s dependence on foreign sources of oil.

They’re Back!

Hold on to your kids and wallets, friends. Congress is back in town this week, and Democrats are under a lot of pressure to get things done before the month-long August recess. While financial regulatory “reform” is dominating the headlines, key items of Obama’s socialist agenda, including cap and trade, card check and tax hikes, remain on the table and the backroom, closed-door meetings are already underway.

Among the wackier things under consideration are discussions about severely limiting the mortgage interest deduction. There’s a bright idea – let’s kick the housing market while it’s down. Here’s another one: Roll Call reports today that Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) is trying to capitalize on last week’s court ruling against the Defense of Marriage Act.

Nadler has sponsored legislation to repeal DOMA, and says, “Congress needs to move now. I urge the administration and the Congress to work actively to repeal DOMA, in its entirety, and to abandon all efforts to defend that unconstitutional and immoral law.” Reminder: All the law does is make sure no state is forced to recognize the same-sex “marriages” in another state. Believe it or not, Nadler has 112 co-sponsors for his DOMA repeal bill – Democrats all.

Governors Slam Arizona Lawsuit

The nation’s governors gathered this weekend in Boston for the summer meeting of the National Governors Association. The economy dominated the public debate, but according to the New York Times, immigration was the most heated topic during a private meeting between top White House officials and Democrat governors – many of whom were furious over the Obama Administration’s lawsuit seeking to strike down Arizona’s new anti-illegal immigration law.

Tennessee Gov. Phil Bredesen (D) blasted the lawsuit, saying, “Universally the governors are saying, ‘We’ve got to talk about jobs.’ And all of a sudden we have immigration going on. It is such a toxic subject [at] such an important time for Democrats.” Bredesen is right – the Arizona lawsuit is “toxic” for Democrats. Polls show a measly 28% of voters support Obama’s lawsuit against Arizona.

Colorado Gov. Bill Ritter (D), who is not seeking reelection, noted, “This is an issue that divides [Democrats] politically, and I’m hopeful that [the administration’s] strategy doesn’t do that in a way that makes it more difficult for candidates to get elected, particularly in the West.”

But while Democrat governors were giving the White House an earful, Attorney General Eric Holder said on a Sunday talk show that the administration may file additional lawsuits against Arizona. If only the administration were this tough on illegal aliens!

The Obama Administration’s strategy is clear – it has to crush Arizona, to make an example of it so that no other state is tempted to similarly enforce the law. If Arizona wins, other states will step up and do what Washington won’t – enforce the law – and that would be a nightmare for the administration and its left wing, pro-amnesty allies.

And while the Obama Justice Department is throwing the book at Arizona for attempting to enforce the law, sanctuary cities that violate federal immigration law get off scot-free. The rule of law is a sacrosanct principle in America. But from accusing the Cambridge cops of “acting stupidly” to dismissing the case against the New Black Panther Party, from dissing bondholders to suing the state of Arizona, this administration seems to have a problem enforcing the law and supporting those who do.

Searching for Islam’s Contributions

In late June, NASA administrator Charles Bolden gave an interview to Al Jazeera television and told the Arabic-language news network that before he took his new job, Obama told him that “perhaps” his “foremost” duty was “to find a way to reach out to the Muslim world and engage much more with dominantly Muslim nations to help them feel good about their historic contribution to science … and math and engineering.” This is ludicrous. It is not our government’s job to make Muslims feel good about themselves.

But, as I write today at Human Events, the remark was in keeping with an administration that is willing to go to ridiculous lengths to appease Muslims. You can read my piece at

Judge Dumps Part Of DOMA

Yesterday, a federal judge in Boston invalidated a significant portion of the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act that covers federal benefits for same-sex couples. Sadly, this day seemed inevitable. For years, the militant homosexual movement has relied on unelected liberal activists in the courts to force its morality on the overwhelming majority of the public; to impose results that could not pass in elected legislatures.

Many expect this case, and a similar lawsuit in California, to end up before the Supreme Court. It is one more example of why elections are so important and why men and women of faith must be engaged. The politicians we elect to office nominate and confirm the judges who sit on our federal courts, including the Supreme Court. Liberal politicians will give us liberal judges and conservative politicians will give us conservative judges.

There are critical elections coming up in 116 days. If you are not yet registered to vote, please click here to register. If you know of like-minded friends or family members who are not registered, share this link with them and encourage them to register today!

Obama Blames His Name

Barack Obama has the lowest approval rating in Israel of any U.S. president since Jimmy Carter. In an interview yesterday with a major Israeli newspaper, he was asked why he thinks so many Israelis feel anxious about him. Here is his answer, “…some of it may just be the fact that my middle name is Hussein, and that creates suspicion. Ironically, I’ve got a Chief of Staff named Rahm Israel Emanuel.”

Have you noticed that anytime someone has a problem with Obama, he assumes they must be stupid? The media and liberal politicians were very quick to assert that Tea Party supporters were racist bigots. But like the Tea Party supporters, Israelis are anxious because of Obama’s policies, not his middle name.

They have watched him bow to Saudi rulers, appease Middle Eastern despots, rail against Israel building homes in Jerusalem, give hundreds of millions to Palestinian extremists and try to undermine Israel’s elected government. His middle name could be Moses, and any thinking Israeli would feel anxious about his intentions. Barack Hussein Obama is clueless.

Speaking of Israel, Rep. Mike Pence, chairman of the House Republican Caucus, and I have an editorial in today’s Washington Times on the critical condition of U.S./Israeli relations.

The Voters Agree – Obama’s A Socialist!

Campaign for Working Families has been promoting our “S.O.S – Stop Obama’s Socialism” bumper stickers for some time now. We also devoted an entire report to outlining Obama’s socialist instincts. Thankfully, the message is getting through to the American people!

A new poll by Democrat James Carville’s firm found that 55% of likely voters would describe Obama as a socialist. Thirty-three percent say the term describes Obama “very well.” In addition, 57% of likely voters consider Obama “too liberal” and 61% describe him as a “big spender.”

Obama’s Anti-Youth Agenda

Barack Obama won the presidency with the vigorous support of young voters. Given how enthusiastically young voters embraced Obama, many assume that his policies have had largely positive effects on America’s youth. But, as I explained in an op-ed for Politico yesterday, a closer look reveals that Obama’s agenda harms many young Americans in important ways. In fact, many may be beginning to feel that they literally cannot afford to be as exuberant about the man they so easily fell for. You can read my piece here.

“Turning the Tide”

It has come to our attention that the online video of Dr. Charles Stanley’s outstanding sermon entitled “Turning the Tide” was archived overnight. It is too good to miss, my friends. So, just in case you could not find it this morning, here is the correct link to this powerful message.
